Too cold for air gap atomization?

84 bird, 355 Dyno 403, 423 torque. Ran perfectly at shop and in car.(in garage only not on street yet). Had to swap out hooker shorty headers due to weld issue on collector. Now cannot get motor to run.. It fires but will not catch, have verified firing order. A friend is concerned that with the air gap 180cc, that even in the garage it may be to cold for complete atomization. When the engine was built, the builder said that it may be too cold for cold weather locations. Anyone have this as an issue? This is in a heated garage in Minnesota - the garage is heated when I am working in it only.. Thx byron

Re: Too cold for air gap atomization?

I have an Air Gap intake and cold weather starting, although not as crisp as it is in the summer, isn't really an issue. I don't even have a choke on the Barry Grant 750. When it's below zero here, (central Alberta) say -10C or 14F , it takes a few stabs of the throttle to get it to fire. I'll inevitably have to restart it once or twice but once it has 30=45 seconds of my holding it at about 1500 rpm, it'll idle on it's own (800 rpm).
This is an iron headed Gen 1 SBC with 10:1 compression and cranking pressure around 190 psi. About 16 degrees of initial timing. Full MSD ignition from distributor to Blaster II coil to 6AL ignition box. Plugs gapped to .045".
Now having said all of that, a nearly identical engine, although with less dynamic compression, (bigger cam, same static compression) was miserable to start in the cold and would wet foul the plugs.

Re: Too cold for air gap atomization?

Skinny z.. Thank you for your response. The heads are afr aluminum, plug gap was set at .047, went to .044 which I don't believe should be an issue. The carb is a quick fuel, 4 corner idle 650... I know the chokes are finicky, however the plugs definitely foul. Anyone else with info would be greatly appreciated. Thx byron
