Wiring harness and ECU?

Hey guys. I have this 89 chevy k1500 305 tbi. Im going to swap it into my 92 3.1 v6 camaro rs. My question is would I need to get the exact 89 305 wiring harness for the engine or can I get a 1992 camaro 305 tbi wiring harness and hook it up. Also, the same for the ECU. Do i need to go scavenge for the 89 or can I get away with using the 92. Thanks.

Re: Wiring harness and ECU?

You want a 90-92 harness TBI harness to make the swap the easiest. The 89 harness would be a pain. You'll also need a to install a buffer box for the TBI due to the ECM want a different pulse per mile than the speed (2000 vs 4000 iirc). The truck ECM is different than the F-body ECM, but my understanding is that they are completely swappable as a while unit, but you can't put the chip from a 92 into the 89, or vise versa.

Alright, that sounds great. Thank you for clearing that up for me. Also, will VATS be a problem in this swap?

Re: Wiring harness and ECU?

I thought about that when I originally replied but couldn't come up with a scenario where it wouldn't work. The VATS module is separate from the ECM so that won't effect the starter relay. For the fuel, the 1989 module won't have VATS enabled and if you use the 92 it will be getting the proper signal anyway. Normally the issue comes when putting a VATS ECM in a non-VATS car.
