Disconnecting Trans from Engine
This is my first time pulling an engine out and I need help.
I know it's better to pull both the engine and the trans together, but our hoist isn't the best to pull both weight. I tried and the hoist started tilting a little so now I'm trying to pull just the engine. I unbolted all 6 bolts from the bell housing and the three bolts holding the torque converter from the flexplate. Pulled the engine up, but the transmission is still stuck to it. I thought it was the torque converter since there seems to be a shaft that goes into the middle of the flexplate but I doubt it now since the torque converter spins freely along with the said shaft regardless the engine is slightly pulled or not.

Hi RubbleRubble. It is probably just stuck on the alignment pins. It is not unusual for them to be a little tight after being together for many years. Don't be afraid to wiggle the engine pretty rough to get it loose. You can grab the trans by the tailshaft and wiggle that also. You almost always forget to unhook something on the back of the engine so just remember to look carefully when taking the engine out. Good luck.

Also, make sure you support the front of the transmission with some wood in between the transmission pan and a jack (to spread out the load)and have the crossmember bolted in to support the back of the xmsn. if you don't support it, once the engine separates, the xmsn will fall and sad faces will be had.

I'll try it out as soon as these strong winds stop. Thanks for the suggestions. Just unbolted the cross member to let me shake the tail of the transmission probably tomorrow. Got the pan jacked with a piece of wood length wise. The pan will hold the weight just fine right?

The pan will do just fine with the weight spread out. Make sure the converter is pushed all the way towards the xmsn so that the snout is out if the crank. I suggest using some bailing wire (or similar) to tether the converter to the xmsn to prevent it falling out. The stock converter is a solid 30 - 40 lbs when full, so be careful.

Re: Disconnecting Trans from Engine
just gotta wiggle it. as someone said before, there's two alignment pins that are probably holding it up, you're gonna have to take the cross member bolts out of the sub frame in order to slide the trans back far enough to get the pins out.
just make sure it's supported well and do not use the torque converter to support the front of the trans. I made the fatal mistake of putting a block of wood under the torque converter to keep the front end from dipping down when putting a 700r4 into my trans am and it resulted in me leaving a trail of trans fluid around my neighborhood

I took off the long bolt right in the middle. That should be enough right?
