how to build 400hp sbc for cheap!

1. strong 4 bolt main short block.(ill just see how long it takes to frag my 2 bolt)
2. comp "268"cam
3.afr 180cc alum heads.
4.airgap intake and 750 cfm holley.

416 hp at 6000 rpm
435 ft lbs at 4200

if you have a 350 already this is only a $1500 investment. thats nuts.

thought id share.

throw this in your ride, go 12s, have a nice day.

i also forgot, this is with 9 to 1 compression,64cc combustion chamber,
and the cam is a comp "extreme energy 268"

to me this is more like a 380 horse motor, since i dont go past 5500 rpm anyway. with its peak at 6000.

later

I wouldn't have gone with the 4 bolt 400 block. The webbing is very thin for the 4 bolts. A 2 bolt block is actually stronger and you can easily put a stud kit into it for added strength.

i was talking about a 350 4 bolt block not a 400, maybe you saw 400hp and thats what confused you?

im useing a 350 2 bolt, they say its good to about 400 horse, so well see what happens.

the trick in this equation is the cam. the 268 is a smoker...best cam out there for power. the only problem is, you have to run a stall converter with that big of a cam...otherwise, all you'll be doing is roasting tires...

Woohoo, Thats the combination I'm going to be running in my new 396 big block in 3 months. I should be able to pick up a few ponies over that because if the valve sizes, and the extra 58 cubes.

How much of an effect would switching to midly ported Vortec heads instead of the AFR's have?

Well..
How i see it.
if you do what machining needs to be done, and assemble it yourself. you can have a fresh Vortec headed 9.5-10.0 355, intake, carb and distributor, Xe 268 cam, for appox 1500 bucks including buying the block.. appox 400hp at the crank, depending on the headers, and the tuning and such.
400ponies, is no need for a 4bolt main.. a solid 2 bolt will be fine.

all depends on how much you get brand new, and how much you do yourself, and how much you rebuild as to the cost.

That's funny, I read into it thinking it was a 400ci. Nice modification combo. I would definitly consider it on my next project. But, you did peak my curiosity on a 400ci. This was my only regret, I wish I had built a 400 instead. Like they say "There is no replacement for displacement," and with a SBC that's how big we can go. Don't you ever think "what if I went with that 400?"
