What would it take for a normally running, base model 1989 Pontiac Firebird to get a 305 Turbocharge? What type of transmission would even survive a swap? I currently have a 2.8L in it and I don't know if I can just reinforce that or if I should grab a whole new tranny from a different car.

You'll want to read up on both V8 swaps, and turbocharging. The quick answer is that pretty much everything is different on a V8 from a V6. No one should ever do anything with a 305. And if you don't already have a working knowledge of turbocharging, you've got a TON of reading and learning ahead of you.
