L31 or L31R?

After reading several threads it seems like the best option for replacing my L98 with a cracked block is an L31 or L31-R (along with a Vortec intake). Can anyone tell me the difference between the L31 and L31-R and whether either one would work with my 1991 Formula TPI components? Thank you all very much for your help.

The "R" is basically the same engine, just with 4 bolt mains instead of 2. Pretty sure they are the same other than that.

Great thank you! From what I understand the L98 is a 2 bolt main so I will probably just stick with that and get the L31 since I'm not looking to make huge power.

If you are not on a super tight budget, I would just spend the extra $100 and get the 4 bolt mains. Never know what the future holds..

Just my .02
