The black box in your picture is a diverter valve for the air pump. the valve is activated by the computer. the valve diverts air to the exhaust manifolds or the cat depending on weather the engine is cold or hot hope this helps

Yea, that's the air diverter valve. If you aren't running smog stuff you probably won't need it. But Michigan is a nice state, run your emissions equipment.

It's called the AIR diverter valve or PEDES valve.
If you keep your AIR pump and AIR headers/manifolds and cat you'll need it. If you're not going computer-controlled, then you don't need it.
