Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Hi all, i don't really know where to put this, but i am swapping my 1970 nova that had a 2 piece rear main 350 to a 1998 Vortec 350. This forum tends to be the best source for t5 related questions so please bear with me. The car has a wc t5 from an 88 Camaro that was working ok. When i try and mount the t5 to the new engine i make it to within 1/16th in to the bell housing. Using a socket that is approximately the size of the input shaft i gauged the depth of crank the the bell housing and found that it is likely the input shaft is hitting the back of the crank past the pilot bushing. Has anyone else hit this? Are 1 piece cranks shallower than 2 piece? I measured the height of my bell housing which is off a 68 chevelle and it seems as tall or taller than the one from the 88 camaro.
I have read that people shorten these transmissions all the time for flat head engines and such... but it does not make me feel warm and fuzzy to take a Dremmel to my input shaft.
Ended up cutting it about 3/16 inch. Used the old pilot bushing as a guide to make it square and constantly sprayed water to keep the rest of the shaft cool. Trans flopped right in and seems happy.
