mine seems like quite a bit, I think if I measured it where the shaft exits the collar it might be close to 2mm of play, that would be 1mm down and 1mm up. i just bought it and I really can't afford to rebuild it right now, but I also don't want to put it in my car if i'm just going to have to turn around and pull it right back out again.

fluid in the tranny shouldnt matter, but 1mm of play is probably less than what mine had, and it's been living behind a stout 355 for the better part of a year now. mine may have had up to 1/4" of play, bottom to top.

wow, that is quite a bit. makes me feel alot less nervous about putting this one in my car. does your car have excessive whining in gear?
anyone else have this kind of problem and still have the tranny work fine?

A little side to side play in the input is normal for a trans with some miles on it. All the ones that come into my shop in good working order have this. There's no abnormal wear when I tear them down. The input shaft rides on the end of the mainshaft on roller bearings stacked in the input shaft. This isn't meant to be ridgid. A little play is okay.
Whining would worry me a bit. One thing that will increase trans noise is an aftermarket shifter. This eliminates the rubber that absorbed a lot of this noise, and made the shifter feel like a breadstick in a bowl of noodles. Still, a T5 should be quiet. Are you sure the noise is coming from the trans? Because of the torque arm style rear suspension noises are often transmitted from the rearend to the trans. It sounds like the trans is whining, but it's really the rear. I'd pull the rear cover and check the gears and backlash. You maybbe suprised.
