Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
I’m looking to trade my current hot rod for something else. The main offer on the table is an 86 Camaro, I don’t know which package or sub model. He’s done a BBC swap to a 1972 454 bored to 468. It has 700r4 automatic transmission with a 3000 rpm stall converter, 4:10 posi rear end, and he claims that it’s pushing close to 500 hp. My question is, what is the weak link in this setup? I’m nervous that the car or drivetrain may not be able to hold up to the power or weight of the Big Block. Any and all advice, information and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
Main weakest link is the transmission. 700r4s weren’t meant to handle much more HP than stock. Maybe he beefed it up but I’d still be concerned with a 700r4 behind a BBC. Second would be the rear end if he just put 4:10s in the stock rear.
Yeah I was kinda thinking that the transmission might be an issue but I don’t know if it’s stock or beefed up, I did find some 700r4s that are capable of handling up to 650 hp so that might be something I do in the future. Or is there a stronger transmission that I could use? Also he hasn’t done much in the way of chassis reinforcements, would that be an issue?
