1986 iroc Camaro

Hi Guy’s I got an 1986 iroc Camaro I’m putting a 383 strokes in . The car had the 305 tpi set up . I would like to do a temporary carb system until I get the fuel injection stuff figured out . So my question is do I have to change the fuel pump in the gas tank to do this or is it possible to run some kind of fuel pump regulator to get the pressure down enough to do that ??? Thanks….

Yep. You need a rerturn style carb and set the regulator to around 8psi usually

Yeah, you're gonna need a new pump and minimally the return line will need to be larger. I ran a new return and feed line in my car and used an Aeromotive stealth pump/tank setup. I've done 2 different EFI swaps. If you coming from a TPI and swapping to a carb and then a standalone EFI late, I don't know how much your gonna save by going to a carb vs EFI. Unless you have a bunch of carb parts sitting. The EFI systems are pretty complete less the fuel system. You'll need a fan controller is you go carb. The EFI systems have it built in. Same with fuel pump controls. My pro flow xt fit under the stock hood and was easy to set up and tune.

To go to a carb you can use your original fuel pump and return line. You will need a fuel pressure regulator. I had to put in switches to control my radiator fans.

I agree with Firechicken82 The new aftermarket EFI systems are the way to go. I wish I had went with aftermarket like Holley Sniper or something alike instead of spending so much $$ modding my factory TBI system

I’ve heard so many people are disappointed with the sniper systems. That said you’d need to spend$$$$ on tuning so I’m not sure it’s worth it . I need to do further research. Thanks

Re: 1986 iroc Camaro

I've had 2 pro flow systems. They were/are awesome. No issues with either. I have 2 friends who have them and are equally as happy. I have the XT now. The 4 barrel style won't fit under the TA hood.

I feel like the key with them is doing a good job on the instal and reading the directions. I know that sounds dumb but it's true.

Re: 1986 iroc Camaro

I personally love my Sniper system. Coming from a carb there is no comparison in starting/idle, road manners, mileage, and throttle response. I would bypass the carb option and go straight to the EFI route of some sort, make major changes once rather than twice and the money spent each time. Just my $.02.

Re: 1986 iroc Camaro

I second the sniper. I'm running an aeromotive pump with factory replacement stainless fuel lines and have had zero problems. It's not really that much more than a carb. Plus with the hyperspark distributor and ignition box it's all plug and play. Buy once cry once is really true, Ive had to replace so many parts trying to save money.
