pulling my tpi motor
hey, I'll bet this question has been asked a million times, but Would it be hard to pull my 305tpi out of my '88 GTA? I was looking at the engine compartment and it doesn't look too tough, but I have a feeling there is something there that'll get me when I'm doing it. I plan on putting in a carbuerated 350 out of a '73 chev i'm building up to be a 355 slightly over 400horse. What sort of things would I need to watch for?

I just pulled mine 2 weeks ago.
Here's some of the things I came recommend.
I used a labeler found at office supply stores to label things.
I left as much of the alt, pwr str, air con, air pump together.
I'll take it apart to clean and all but I left it together for now.
Place any bolt or nut back in the hole it came from if possible. Or bag them with good instructions as to where they belong.
Watch out for the ground straps on the back of the block and heads attached to the firewall. Dont' forget to remove them.
My engine hoist is a folding one(I don't know but it may be shorter then other non-folding one) that when removing the motor it was touching the front facia of my IROC. Just be certain that when lifting the motor the hoist doesn't smash into your car while trying to lift the motor out. I may have to add some length to the arm.
Be organized. I'm not going to be able to install my new motor for a couple of weeks. I hope I can remember where everything goes.

I think Dwayne88IROC pretty much covered it. When I pulled mine I videotaped as I went along. It would never have been enough if i hadnt labled everything , and put every nut and bolt in a labled bag. And whatever you do , dont rush it. I also had the problem with the engine hoist. I took a little chunk out of the front paint before i finally had sense enough to throw some blankets between the car and the hoist. The video tape of each piece as i removed it was invaluable when i put in the new engine.

I am not sure if I'm gonna do this yet, the motor might go into a 4WD pickup so I have a winter car. BUT, damn it would be fun to put that in my T/A! Its gonna be carbuerated, so most of the electronics would be voided I assume. The TPI motor runs fine, its just that it has 120k mi, and the valve seals are going. Well, and 200 horse just doesn't cut it anymore.
Also, the car has the 700R4. Would that hold up alright?
