How much would it cost to get my 305 TPI rebuilt? I want to spend under $2000. Would it be cheaper and better to just get a new one?

Depends upon what you have done.

If you want to drive the car to the shop, have them rebuild it, and drive it home, $2000 is not going to get you very much. Perhaps new rings, bearings, and a valve job.

If you are willing to pull the engine, disassemble it, take the block & heads to a machine shop with all the parts they're going to need to rebuild it, have them do the machine work and "specialty" stuff like pressing pistons, and you reassemble and install it, then $2000 will get you quite a bit more.

However, before spending that much money on a 305, consider finding a rebuildable 350 block, have it rebuilt, put on new aftermarket heads, and you'll have a much better engine for your money. You can also drive the car until you are ready to pull the old engine and install the new.
