cleaning / preping block
ok i have a bare 89' L98 block in my garage. its is actually in pretty good shape and hope i dont need to take it to the machine shop. im just woundering what is involved in cleaning and prepping, and what are the best ways to go about doing this job.

No kidding. That's what you should use. And a whole array of "bottle brushes". I.E. the kind that are made to clean the galleys and water jackets. You should be able to buy a set from the local Autozone or Super Trak.
Just pull all the freeze plugs, and oil plugs first. And scrub-a-dub-dub. Then rinse, rinse, and rinse again. Then blow dry with high pressure air.
As far as the bores go, use white paper towels and tranny fluid. Keep whipping and scrubbing, and changing the paper towels often, until there is absolutely NOTHING but awhite paper with red tranny fluid on it.
Next spray all the machined surfaces with WD-40 to keep them from surface rusting. It'll take only ~10 minutes for rust to start if you don't.
Then cover it with a big black garbage bag (or 2
) , and seal it up tight.
