New fuel delivery ?

This ? is actually for a friend of mine. He has an '88 Formula with a 305 TBI and is getting ready to put in a carbed 355. I told him about the AFPR thing and also told him about pulling the high pres. in tank pump and putting a low pres. in tank pump in. Then he popped a ? on me that I couldn't answer. (I did a search in this forum too, and still nothing)
If he just disconnects the TBI in tank fuel pump, will his mechanical fuel pump on the block be able to pull any or enough fuel through the disabled electronic fuel pump ? He swears that his brother has done it before and it worked. But, I told him that I would check on here to see.

Thanx !!!

OK.. here goes my story. WHen i first put the motor in my car 89z28/327carb, i put a mechanical fuel pump on and tried to pull fuel through the pump just so i could drive the car to my house. It was like 3:00a.m. IT worked fine....It worked so good i left it on until one day i was fiddling in my engine compartment at my house and it ran empty. For some reason, the mechanical pump wasn't able to pull fuel through the lines? brand new pump too. I hooked up the elec pump and it worked fine. disconnected the elec pump and it still worked fine. no probs at all until it got to 1/4 tank. When i got time, i dropped the tank and did it right.
