305 and 350 starter motor torque?

Is there a difference in cranking torque between the two? I just dropped in a 92 crate engine (two peice rear main oddly enough) and went to start it up for the first time and it started perfectly and idled for about 10 seconds, then stalled. When I tryed to start it back up, it would only turn about a 1/4 revolution at a time and I was hearing like a metal on metal grinding noise and sounded like it was coming from on the starter and flywheel, not really sure though. I had taken the 90,000 mile starter off of the L03(9.3:1) and just bolted it to the 350 which is probably around 10.0-10.5:1 one. Is there any chance that I may just a high torque and/or gear reduced starter? Any help would be greatly apprecatied.

Isn't the number of teeth correspondant with the diamater of the flywheel? For example, the one that was on the 305 was 13 inches in diameter and when I went to get one for a two piece it ended up being just a little over 14 inches and wouldn't even intall, so I went back to got one that was 13 inches for a two peice. So what I'm asking is, isn't the number of teeth dependant on the diameter? Cause if it were the wrong number of teeth it wouldn't bolt on at all right?

Flywheel/Flexplate

Be sure you have the right one! Let me find that thread...

This post was a big issue when I was doing my swap. I hope you find it very informative.

Nothing worse than having the wrong flexplate/flywheel.

The original cam I had was too steep. I went with a Crane Powermax 2030 and my problems with the idling vanished.

I did get a high performance starter, but the original starter was bad, and I have a little peace of mind too.

The 305 starter has more starting torque. It's a different style than that used on the 350 engines. If you had a 153 tooth flywheel vs. a 168 tooth flywheel the starter would not fit up if you got it wrong. It almost sounds as if you ran the starter engaged. In other words, the pinion didn't retract from the flywheel once the engine started up. This will ruin the starter overrun clutch. It could also be that you need to "shim" the starter (align it properly). If the clearance between the flywheel and pinion is too tight you will have binding between the gears.

I'm just throwing out ideas. Neither of these may be the problem.
