Your opinion on the GMPP 350 H.O. w/TPI...do you think it'll make it to 330 HP??
I'm taking any opinions you got....
I've been shopping around for a new crate motor to replace my worn out, tired, and cranky LB9 5.0. And did I mention slow? You know that feeling of slow you get, when it takes all your 305 has to keep up with the new V6's?? No, you say? I do, and it sucks! Suuuuucks I tell you!!
Anyways, getting back to this crate motor thing.....
I've finally came to an engine I like, and on thats in my loan budget numbers. This engine is the GM Performance Parts 350 H.O. 330 HP crate from Jeg's (www.jegs.com). I want to take the TPI system off my 305 and use it on this new engine. It has the Vortec heads so I'd need the Scoggin Dickey, Vortec TPI intake to make this work. AccelŽ 24 lb/hr injectors will be in order and I'm doing my own chip...
At any rate, now for the million dollar question:
Would you think 330 HP or slightly more is obtainable, with this setup as is? If no, then why wouldn't it? Thanks for the feedback! Engine specs are below:
330 HP @ 5000 RPM, 380 ft.lbs. Torque @ 3800 RPM (Max. Recommended RPM: 5500)
9.1:1 Compression Ratio
Cast Iron 4-Bolt Block with One-Piece Rear Main Seal
Nodular Cast Iron Crankshaft
Cast Aluminum Pistons
PM Steel Connecting Rods
Cast Iron 64cc Chamber Vortec Cylinder Heads with 1.94'' Intake and 1.50 Exhaust Valves
Dual Pattern Cam, Lift: .435'' Int. / .460'' Exh., Duration @ .050: 212° Int. / 222° Exh.
1.5 Ratio Rocker Arms

330hp is realistic. You might get some more out of it if you can tune it right.

79k miles, and it's worn out? What's up with that?
Even Scoggin Dickey didn't get that much out of it. They got over 300 with aftermarket runners and some other tweaks, but not 330.
I doubt you'd need 24# injectors (22# should be fine). You will need other TPI mods, though. Exhaust.

Two years ago my 350 with a stock TPI, World TQ heads, Edelbrock TES ran 13.73 @ 99mph. With 3500lbs & a 3.73 rear that calcutates to at least 330hp.

Found the article, Feb '02 Chevy High Performance, page 30, three dyno pulls quoted, Scoggin-Dickey's own data (they did use 24# injectors, by the way).
Test 1: L98 lower end, Vortec heads & TPI base, 1-7/8" primary headers, stock TPI runners, plenum, and TB: 395 ft-lbs @ 3400, 305 HP @ 4800.
Test 2: ZZ4 cam, LT4 springs: 399 ft-lbs @ 3500, 317 HP @ 4800.
Test 3: Hot Cam & 1.6 roller rockers, Edelbrock runners & TB: 427 fl-lbs @ 3800, 354 HP @ 4800.
The 330 HP cam is somewhere between the L98 and ZZ4 cam (although not a direct comparison - lift and duration are traded between 330 HP & ZZ4 cams). Had they run it, it probably would have come out close to the ZZ4 cam run. With the other TPI mods, then perhaps over the 330 mark.

I am confused
? Lots of people talk about this 330 hp crate engine from gm running under their tpi. From what I understand, tpi shouldn't function correctly with out a hydralic roller camshaft, which this engine doesn't have. I have read in many books and magizines that this is a no-no that can't be overlooked when building a tpi engine. So what gives, can you run tpi on an engine w/o a roller cam???? Has anyone doen it????

The issue is a computer-compatible cam. Perhaps people are equating that with hydraulic roller, but that is not true. The factory had TPI in '85 and '86, flat-tappet. My Crane cam is computer compatible, flat tappet. The ZZ4 cam was not designed up front as computer compatible, but it works fine with computers. The 330 HP cam is called "off-road", but so is the ZZ4...
I'm not sure why S-D didn't use a 330 HP crate engine for their tests. That would have been the most logical thing to do, but perhaps they were concerned about the cam. Don't know, and their website is silent on the topic (as best I could tell, anyway).

I would like to thank all who replied so far...especially to FIVE 7 KID, who did a little more homework....thanks again to all...350 HP is what my sights were set on with this motor. I see since with the LT-4 HOT CAM and LT4-SPRING (I presume, because the stock springs couldn't take the extra lift) made about 350 HP. With alittle porting of the plenum, throttle body, and larger runners, I think I'll be satisfied with this motor. Now it's a matter of waiting on the loan

I love the motor, not sure about TPI but check out my 1/4 performance in my sig and that's with lots or poor tuning or lack there of. No timing adjustments and basically stock VE tables with fuel pressure set a little higher than stock. I was making about 300hp to run my 3550lb car at 102mph. Definatly needed more tuning
, time to go back to the track
.
Oh yeah, and I'm running stock fuel pump with stock fuel lines up to the Holley 670cfm TB unit.

ROC-Z i am in the same boat as you. I am looking into getting ths motor for my 91tpi z28. i alreadt have a hot cam setup to put in but i will be using my stock ported tpi setup for now. if this engine puts out 300 solid hp with just the cam and stock tpi and mmy other small mods then i will be happy. have you come up with anymore info on this engine. some people say its a 3 bolt and some say 4 bolt. also, will the hot cam just slide in with modifying the block. the dowel pin is already pushed in on the cam.

No such thing as a 3 bolt and it is a 4 bolt main roller cam ready block.
The Lt4 hot cam in this motor with no head mods (except machining for the larger lift) made 422hp with a 625 demon carb on a victor jr. intake. If you're shooting for only 300hp then something is a miss. Make SURE you get big enough injectors. Last thing you want to do is run the car to 3000rpm and notice that there isn't any more fuel...yet you still push the motor to a weak 4000rpm and then 5000 and BANG BAM you just screwed the motor over for running really lean.
Get big injectors, a healthy fuel pump (walbro 255 only $98) and custom eprom...then it's safe to say you'll make more than 300hp and not risk broken internal parts!

JP, i meant to put 2 or 4 bolt. i must have hit the number 3. anyways, i already have lt1 injectors, AFPR, holley fuelpump, and a Ed wright stage 2 chip. i think this should be good for 300 hp with the hot cam using the stock tpi setup. i just hope its a straight swap

Hog out your stock TPI intake as big as you can get it, runners also, and using the hot cam and 52mm TB you should hit it.
