Car: 1999 Chevy Cavalier
Engine: 2.2
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: it's part of the transmission
something you wont have to swap again.

in your case, I would find a 350 from an older car with better heads/cam....no smog stuff. or put one together. personally, I like the idea of sticking with a small block to keep the wieght proportional to the rest of the car. make sure your not limiting your engine with external components, match your parts. much info on that stuff here, tech articals,archives.........I've seen it all since '99 ,in here somewhere.

I would have to agree the easiest is to go to a junkyard and pich up an old truck 350 and redo the internals and you good to go. It's cheap and eas to do.

If you get an older truck engine just keep the lower end only. The heads they but on the trucks are horrible. See if you can yank some older passenger car heads. The 1.94 i and 1.50 e with 76cc chambers. Then get a performer intake and matching cam and you are good to go. Dont pull apart the bottom end unless it nocks and a valve job on the heads is not the worst idea either.
A 600 cfm Holley and HEI distributor will get you about 270 hp with decent drivability. This is fairly good performer with very little money spent.
