400 heads

hey guys i have the chance to get a 350 with an aluminum highrise intake, probably a cam, holley carb and 400 heads. i'm not to sure as of everything yet but the guys wunts 400 bucks. he said his son built it then got locked up and its been sittin in his garage for a year. my question is wuts the diff between 400 heads and 350 heads? oh yea there 400 pontiac heads he said. are the valves bigger? also i thought the 400 pontiac was a big block? well is this a good deal for 400 bucks? thanks

WTF? A pontiac engine is totally different than a chevy smallblock. Find out what you are deling with before you go buying stuff to swap. If its a pontiac 350 with pontiac 400 heads, pass on it. WAY more trouble than its worth. If its a chevy 350 and chevy 400 heads it might be worth it.

TAS is right, if the guy tells you that it has 400 pontiac heads he is full of ****. The only difference between most 400 heads and the 350 heads is the steam holes. I have a set of xxx882 castings heads on my 350 right now that came stock on either 350's or the 400.

400$ sounds like a steal to me! 400 chevy heads are ****, they all have 1.72/1.50 valves and 76cc, pontiac heads on the other hand are WAY better. pontiac 400 heads are the best you can get from pontiac depending on what casting number they are, are NO pontiacs have steam holes. the big valve 400 heads have 2.11/1.77 and the small valve are 1.96/1.66 all stock 350 pontiac heads are junk except fot the 18 casting, you can find out what heads they are by looking on the center exhaust port on the head,

if its a chevy 350 with pontiac heads. whoa, that must be one hell of a head gasket, and i dont even want to see the intake manifold. if this guy is telling you it is what you say, i dont think i would by anything from him. just my .02 you cant put poncho heads on a chevy. yes, pontiac 400 heads are good, the 16 heads are also good, thats what my buddy has on his 455. hope this helps.

no way pontiac heads fit a chevy, they do make pontiac and buick heads that fit chevys, but they are crazy expensive.

400 small block Chevy heads had 1.94 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves.

I've torn down some (actually two) that had 1.6 exhaust valves but have seen no printed reference to that size.

I've torn down about a dozen 400s from the early '70s to the late 70s and yet to see one with smaller than 1.94s/1.50s.
