I'd get an X or H pipe, No4N has an H I believe, that will improve performance.

I doubt the crackling is from the muffler. You probably just hear it more now than you did before, so it increased the noticability of the symptom but didn't actually make the problem itself worse.

As far as I know the sound is caused by unburnt fuel being sucked through the system and igniting when it hits hot spots in the pipes. Cats make this less noticable because they burn it up plus dampen sound. Mike's LeMans (Camrs89) crackels and pops like hell... and he's got true duals with glasspacks. But its also running kinda rich, which would explain the extra fuel getting into the pipes.

Yeah, my LeMans as Dave stated, crackles when you let off the gas. Its cause I have a extremly worked q-jet on there that is a little much for the engine. Oh well, it will work just fine when the 455 gets dropped in.

I had the same problem that you ha dood. I thought I was running rich which i still might be. But what I did was take teh smog pump off and threw it on teh garage floor, turned the car back on revved that SOB and no more backfire or crackling. Try that. Taking off the smog pump only does more good than bad, unless you have emmissions testing. I plan to bolt it back on fo remmissions testing just in case.

I've had the same thing two different times. The first time I was running too rich, the second was an exhaust leak where the manifold bolts to the head.
