Headers

Ok. I'm replacing the engine in my 86 Z tomorrow. I was thinking of putting headers on. What is the difference between shorty and long tube? Will going with the shortys bolt up to the stock exhaust? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Also are the shorty headers emission legal?

Long tubes are good for dual exhaust. There are many different types of shorties out there. Some are and some aren't. You should do a search and find out what you can from there. This is asked time and time again. There should be some good info for you. Hooker super comps are emmisions legal. AIR and O2.

thanx for the response. I'll keep looking around. I just want to do as much as I can while I'm off work.

The long tubes come out under the car which makes it really easy to hook up true duals. For shortys, you will have to have a y-pipe custom made, or buy one from whoever makes the headers (they might not even sell them, in which case you would need the custom). True duals with shortys is a little more difficult though, but still possible. You will just have to have an exhaust shop bend the pipes going to the collectors so that they act like a set of long tubes. Then you can finish them exactly as you would with the long tubes, but for a fraction of the cost of the long tubes. To answer your other question, you can get headers that are emmissions legal in either form (shorty or long tube), but they might not flow as well as ones that are not. Hope this helped.
