Question for the experts

Guys, some recommendations if you please.

I have an 88 IROC with the TPI 305 and 5-speed. My cat just died so I had it replaced with a hi-flow unit. However, when the car was up on the hoist, I noticed that the stock muffler and tailpipes are getting holes. So....what do I replace them with? Basically I want something that flows reasonably well, hopefully better than the stock muffler. But I don't want it to be too bow-wow loud. A modest increase in exhaust noise is OK, but nothing major. I also want it to look stock, no ***** tips or anything garish.

Should I go with a Flowmaster 80 series and keep the crossflow system with the dual outlets so it's basically a better flowing version of what came stock, or should I go with a single muffler (make/model??) and single 3" outlet on the driver side? And what about the tailpipe(s) themselves?

Whatever I go with, I want it to mount in the stock location. What say you?? Thanks in advance.

Well, if you're already thinking Flows, that will be loud. The Hooker cat-back is quieter at idle, but I think sounds better accelerating. Sound clip in sig.
If not dynomax makes a nice flowing cat-back with low noise.

I have the Dynomax kit on my car and I love it. It was ~$160 and came with everything, except maybe the clamps? I don't remember now. That was ~2 yrs. ago.

The tailpipes that come with it are made to fit in the stock location, so they look stock.

The sound, IMO, is wonderful. It's very deep and mellow. Not loud at all, but you can still hear it from a block or so away. That's because it's so deep sounding. Lower frequency sound waves are less directional (IE harder to tell where the sound is coming from) and also seem quieter. Everyone that's heard my car says it sounds mean, then I tell them it's the stock 305 and they can't believe it.

Although I must say that going with a one-in/one-out muffler does flow more freely than a crossflow. And most of them are set up so that the tailpipe is under the car and less noticable.

Good luck,
AJ

P.S. Go with Dynomax They are the manufactures of stock exhaust systems for Porsche. That's gotta say something about the flow capabilities.

If you don't want loud, go with the hooker or dynomax.

I have flowmaster 80 on mine w/ no cat and it sounds great, but yes it is loud. I would recommend hooker or flowmaster, you cant go wrong with either. Hooker flows a lil bit better than flowmaster I believe. Good luck!

IMO as long as you have manifolds, a converter and stock size pipes NO muffler is loud.
