Screw the government I'm gonna take my cat off soon, and I guarantee I'll be able to pass emission next year Just "accidentally" drop 20 bucks next to the emissions guys foot....You'll pass

Go ahead and gut them. I have dual cats and both are gutted and I have been able to pass emissions with flying colors for the past 3 years.

Have fun.

You can also take the shields off your old cats and weld them to a straight pipe that way you pass the visual.

hmmmm

i just bought headers and a y pipe for my 89 305 camaro ... the y pipe looks long, will it eliminate my cat ? well if it doesnt im going to either gut it or put some kind of replacement pipe there ... im not worried about emissions cause i pay for stickers lol ... when i got the car it has no cat or muffler lol ... but now ive got the 3 inch cat back american thunder flows on it and its ok, but it needs to be louder and stuff ... hopefully the headers will not only add mad HP but make it louder

Just get under the car with a tape measure. I'm guessing its around 14"-18", and the diameter would vary with your exhaust system.

Some people I herd of would pass a car cause they like it. If there is some Rod that comes up there that no way would pass but looks and sounds nice they would pass it and fail the next rice. There are some Jag offs out there though. One queer faild me cause my head lights didnt move up and down by them self.

Now I'm really going to have to gut the cats...
I did a search just recently, and found that some times the exhaust has a bad smell after the mod, hows yours?

how did you gain like 1.2 seconds in the 1/4 just by gutting your cat? i gutted my cat and noticed hardly any difference, did you do anything else that you may have forgot to say? i just find it hard to believe that you dropped over a second just by doing that, but if you really did thats awesome and i wish mine woulda responded that way..

well yah actually it was even more of a gain then that

cuz i ran a 15.9 when i first got the car......then i added those mods and stuff and ran it again and got the same.........then i went one night this spring and ran 17's cuz my car was running so hot!!.........so i hooked up a switch to my fan so it had a manual override and it ran cool this time.........then this week i gutted the cat....felt a huge difference and took it to the strip and ran the 14.7

i'll go get all of my time slips and post them so u guys believe me........

i think it was clogged too........and now my car can breathe

here are some time slips.......top 2 are of me back in the day......i was TO37........as u can see i ran a 15.9 one time......and a 17 the other time.........engine was HOT!!!!.........and on the bottom are the new ones i did........u can see my 14.8........which was the run right after my 14.7 run....u cant really see the 14.7 run......i'm gonna try and rescan it.........

the mods that i have done are
k&n air filter
hooker Cat-back exhaust
and then the gutted cat now........well and the fan switch .........but that doesnt reallyl boost hp......it just helps keep my engine cool so i dont run another 17!!!

Nice improvement Matt ! I had a stock 84 L69 and even though I didnt have a time before I gutted my cat I also noted a big difference. My first run at the track netted a 14.55 ( with gutted cat). If you run this fall with some nice cool air you will probably be able to knock two more tenths off your time.

Was it hard to get the cat off. mine is clogged and i dont wanna spent the money for a new one. My car is running like crap and it needs to be done. so if one of yall could, could you tell me exactly hw you did it so i can find the easiest way to do it and not to damage the cat. i figured i was gonna use an air hammer and im sure it would be useless then.

I want to remove my cat also since I have a stock cat, my cat is not welded on thank goodness its just held on w/ clamps, after I remove the clamps & loosen the cat would I pull towards hte rear of the car to free the front part then pull down and squeeze it out????

most people find it extrememly difficult to get the stock cat off. it is bolted on by the tranny and on the front is held on with a clamp. the clamp most likely pinched the pipe. after trying for hours with two guys pulling on the cat we put a die grinder on it and it came right off. we just made sure to cut through the metal on the cat only and cut as little as possible. to gut mine i used a crow bar and some high pressure water and a bunch of up and down motion.

no i didnt change my rods and hangers........

all i did was unbolt the 4 back bolts to the cat then got a drill gun and got the biggest drill bit that i could find and just went at it.....then i reved it up and most of it came out but i had to use a rod to get the rest out.........

if any of u guys do this and go to the strip, post your gains cuz i wanna know if all cats restrict this much flow........good luck

just got done taking my cat off. only problem was that it has already been gutted by the previous owner. so now i have to put it all back together but i had to cut one of the bolts that holds it on off so ill have to tap that and rethread it. the car sure sounds good it off tho. tempted to leave it off.

Do you think, that I could gut my cat, and leave all the SMOG stuff on it and still pass emissions? BTW, Paul Russell, nice ride! How do you like the hood?

I got a straight pipe in place of the cat. It does sound a hell of a lot meaner, especially once you get on the gas.

what exactly is involved in gutting your cat, like how did u do it. i'm thinkin about gettin some new pipes and maybe headers for the car and if the muffler shop wont take the cat off then i will gut it myself, if it isn't to hard. thanks

7MPH is a hugh horsepower increase, noone should gut their cat because of this post, because this is a rarity. We need to go to 41 sometime Matt, your L69 is running close to my L98.

if you gut your cat, take it off and there is a bunch of honeycomb $h*t, when you see all that you will understand why it so restrictive. I just took a long flat head screwdriver and broke it up.

When I gutted my cat last night I got the rear bolts off but I coulldn't yank it off the y-pipe because it was pinched. I was destined to gut it so I literally took off the Y-pipe w/ the cat on it and gutted it that way.

After gutting the inards "and for a 17 yr. old stock 7 layer cotton stuff cat that is completely black, it is VERY restrictive" I put it back on and boy oh boy was it loud, then again I was running with my cut out open so I have to close it. But boy does it sound nice, I wonder how much HP I have regained by doing this.

Just so people realize guttin your cat, won't drop you close to even a second, but it will help some, more if it was clogged.

Just buy a hi flo one and you will hardly notice the difference, if you need a cat.

Well, here goes my 1000th post, whooo hooo!!! No, I've never seen her. Just did a quick search though. I cant be looking at those kind of pics at work, lol. The pic on her home page didnt look so hot either. IMO, and a couple of guys here at work, the pic you have in your sig, looks like a man. I could have sworn I've seen that face on Springer or something

I just had a guy in a position to view more "risque" (read NEKKED) pics. He said in some pics she looks great, others are no so hot. I'll take your word for it, but I still think
