305 crossfire - Headers / AIR (?) system
Hi folks - Ok , I need to get new headers, Y-pipe and a new exhaust for my 82 T/A - I suppose the question is really about losing what *appears* to be the AIR system, 4 small pipes coming off the driver side exhaust manifold / header . The previous owner has removed the cat , replacing it with a straight-through pipe, there appears to be no separate AIR pump (did the crossfire actually have an AIR system or pump for that matter ?) only the alternator , power steering pump and air conditioning pump. So , can I just buy headers without the facility for attaching the AIR system (or whatever those pipes / hoses are) , fit them and have no running problems , or would I be asking for trouble ?
Hope this question makes sense - basically , do I need to bother about having / locating the AIR system (if that's what it's called) when purchasing new headers etc , for a car that will have NO catalytic converter fitted ? I did a search , but could find nothing relating directly to the crossfire injected V8, so any advice would be appreciated !
cheers

I'm not sure, but i think your car did have a belt driven air pump (AIR). However, if you don't need it for emissions purposes, and it's gone anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. Your car apparently is running OK without it now, right? As far as headers/Y-pipe go, SLP offers them with 1-5/8" or 1-3/4" primaries #30004, #30005, although they are rather expensive.
Hedman has #68470 header/#17470 Y-pipe, Hooker offers #2460, but without Y-pipe. All these are for use without AIR. The SLP Y-pipe is 3" outlet, I think the Hedman is 2.5". Anyway, you shouldn't run into any problems without AIR, people do it every day.
Hope this helps

thanks alot for that - the part nos. and measurements are appreciated also ! yeh , the car is running fine come to think of it , so I'm just going to do away with the AIR pipes altogether when I get the new headers - it'll tidy the engine bay up a bit , as well as look alot better ! Oh , and a bit more power will be nice too !!
thanks again !

A couple of things I might add: I should have mentioned that if your 305 is pretty much stock, the 1-5/8" primary headers will most likely give you the most low RPM torque. Also, I am a firm believer in using the best gaskets and locking fasteners you can buy. It's a small additional investment that should make your headers more trouble free. Ceramic coatings are also worthwhile if you can afford it. Good Luck
