smoke on startup

When i start the car 86 TA, a big puff of smoke comes out the exhaust. I don't think it does it while driving, at least not that i can tell.
It's embarrassing, it's like my car farted and everyone can see it.
Please advise, thanx

Have you greased your muffler bearings? Those damn things go bad fast if you don't keep up on 'em. :sillylol:

Seriously, it's probably the valve seals. How many miles on the oil burner? If you step up to a higher grade of oil, sometimes you can delay the inevitable.

At the risk of sounding stupid, what's an oil burner? and is it something that gets fixed when ya get an oil change? Oh, and whats the inevitable? engine seizure?
Thanx, marie

It it is a typical chevy thing. Mine does it and I only have 34,000 origonal miles. When the car sits for more than a day it does it and it looks soooo funny when it happnes. People are like "Goo, I thought your car was nice"

ROTFLMAO!!!

we all have that problem. it's the valve seals.
if you care to fix it it's a wekend project.
or you can just deal with the smoke on a cold start up until the engine dies.

he he.... yeah check those damn muffler bearing.
and the headlight fluid too. lol

Since his engine's burning oil, that's how I labeled it. It was just a little "slap-dipstick humor".
and is it something that gets fixed when ya get an oil change?
No. Unless, like I said earlier, you put in a higher grade (thicker) oil. Then it's harder for the oil to run down into the cylinders. That's all.
Oh, and whats the inevitable? engine seizure?
No. Replacing the valve seals is the "inevitable". That's more than likely the cause of his problem. It's something I'm doing on an old '83 1/2 ton I own because I'm a cheap bastard and don't wanna spend the money to replace rings to.
Thanx, marie
No problem. Sorry for the confusion. I guess I can't expect everyone to understand the slang terms.

BTW, I have 180K miles on my car and it don't smoke at all when I start it, EVER!! I don't know what the previous owner did but it worked. I bought it with 168K miles, so it wasn't nothin' I did.

Sorry. I didn't pay attention that YOU were the one that started the thread.

That and using "he" in a general sense of refference is what's normally used in the English language. Kind of like "you". Except when a doctor is talking about babies. Then the general refference is usually "she".

That and I didn't think you were a blonde. I've actually never met a female named Marie who was a blonde. It just doesn't fit. Blonde names are "Fefe", "Crissy", and "Susie". Marie's are usually long haired brunettes.

Yea, umm ... i guess they all do this, because mine with 150000 is smoking pretty badly, and my buddy's 89 TA with 88000 is starting to smoke too.

HOW DO YOU FIX THIS? Its is soooo darn annoying! Is it difficult, or costly? Its gotta be one of the two, or else everyone would be fixing their cars!

Anyhow, any info on fixing the smoking is appreciated.

Kurt

difficult? somewhat... easier if you have a general knowledge of engine mechanics.
costly? that depends... is you do it yourself... if you only replace the valve seals.... and if you have access tot eh specialty tools you'll need for the job.

i'm not an ace wityh engines so i'm sure somebody can come up with a more direct answer than i did.
but just trying to help till then

ya know what u do u go to pepboys or an advansted auto store and see if they carry something called motor honey or no smoke. something along those lines. its like a thick oil and almost looks like honey, hance the name Motor Honey. but u pour that in when u change ur oil and shouldnt smoke no more. my brothers 86 sport coupe used to do that. untile he put a bottle of the motor honey in it and it gragually stopped and hasnt smoked at all for like almost 2 yrs now. but he has used like 3 bottles but used less and less each time he changed his oil and now he doesnt use any. so u might wanna pick up some of that stuff and try it. its worth the few bucks.

Good now i dont feel alone on that problem, and i only have like 35k miles on it too. But like some of u said it dont happen all the time, usually when the car hasnt started in more than a day. As long as its not a serious problem, and more of an annoyance than i wont really deal with it.

Then the last oil change the dumbass put in some thin 5w30 oil, but that wont happen again.

Actually 5W30 isn't that bad. That is what most GM vehilcles are supposed to run on. I have put 5W30 in since I had my car. The oil cap even says so.

Can this smoke be hurting anything on its way out? (ie the Cat) I figure that the cat's job is to filter your exhaust and now we're blowing this blue/Gray crap through it. Its gotta be somewhat harmfull, no?

Unless you are throwing smoke all the time it should be no big deal. You need to take off the hood, valve covers, take out the plugs and the best thing to use is an air compressure. They make a fitting that goes in place of the plug. That way when you take off the rocker arm and the retainers the valve doesn't fall in the cyl. Do one at a time and make sure you know how to set your valve lash (setting?) With about two people that know what they are doing, about a full day. That is taking your time as well. Chevys are known for the smoke, fact of life. I use oil 20-50, because my motor has 160,000 miles.
