Hot Start Problems

How many of you have hot start problems due to headers? Are some headers more prone to cause hot start problems than others? Could you use the stock starter or did you have to get a mini-starter? What ways could you stop this hot start problem? I was wondering because I was wanting to get some hedman hedders and was told that I would not be able to start the car after driving it for a few hours due to the hedders heat sinking into the starter.

Thanks for the help and info.

the shorty hedmans that come with the y-pipe are pretty much the same design as the tes edelbrock headers. i used to have the tes' on my car with a stock starter and they heat soaked really bad.....one time i drove my car to the track, made it through tech inspection, got into the staging lanes and shut it off. well when the line went to move my car wouldn't start from heat soak so i had to push it. next time my line moved it did the same thing. finally it was my turn to move up and run and i had to turn my key over a couple times real fast before the starter would enguage. long story short.....after drivin 20 miles to the track, it took a little over an hour before it would start on its own free will without having to tap the solenoid with a tire iron. heat soak is a real bad problem with those headers. in the instructions they should at least warn you about heat related problems for the starter but they don't. @$$holes. lol

One way to remedy that problem is to use a remote mounted solenoid like on Fords. Matter of fact, I've seen that very one used on Chevys-just mount it on the fender or other place away from the heat, I'm not sure anymore how to wire it up, but it seems like it would go in series between the battery and the existing solenoid. A heat shield would also help. Good luck.

I just installed the Hedman shorties about two weeks ago.On one particularly hot day(95 Deg.+)my starter did the same thing. No click, nothing.I was kind of wondering when it was going to happen, because the headers were butting right up against the solenoid, and upon meeting a ballpeen hammer, only has about a quarter inch of clearance right now.I made a simple heat shield from some thin sheet metal which seems to have done the trick so far.If it does it again,i'll try the remote solenoid.Summit sells a kit with solenoid, wires and instructions.

Starter heat wrap has worked for me. I have the super comps. No problems.
