headers and cat back questions?

Ok fellas,

I know many of people have asked the same question as I am about to .. which exhaust and header set up is the best. First off I am looking to spend between 500 to 1000 on a set of headers and cat-back exhaust. Now I have just completely rebuilt an 305 engine for my camaro and it sounds good with the mods we did on it. A hell of a lot better than my other one with a 2.8l in it. Now as you can see on the bottom hopefully I have a performer intake, a performer rpm cam, and an edelbrock 600cfm electric choke carb. My goal is to get 300hp out of the 305. I have read that borlas cat back will give you 20-25 hp and I have no idea about the headers on how much they can give you .. i would assume maybe 5-10 max..Now is my goal of 300 hp in reason with the header and catback system in place? Also if i went with a pair of "shorties" they should just bolt to the stock y-pipe shouldnt they? The borla seems a lot more expensive .. why is this? is it really that much better than say a good flowmaster set?

I'll save Mark the trouble... Hooker 2055 headers. Comes with a Y pipe. Hooker also makes a nice cat back for around $200. I'd also assume you'd pick up more than 10 hp with headers. I'm sure it's not as nice a a Borla set up but it's much cheaper and probably very close.

You're not getting the "Super Comp" shorties for $119.99. The "Comp" shorties are less expensive, but even then they're $163.29 (Summit and Jegs have them for $141.99 or so). The "Comp" shorties don't have the y-pipe, either (and none is available).

I'll agree each header has it's good and bad qualities. Pacesetters are cheap, but they're cheap. SLP's are great, but high priced. Etc., etc., etc.
