Should I get a cutout?

I'm gonna get my exhaust done pretty soon, probably SLP ypipe and hooker catback... I was wondering, should I get a cutout or not? Is it going to help any, or is it not really worth it? Just wantin some ideas....

It'll drop 1-2 tenths off your 1/4 time.

If you got the cash, it would be nice to have, wish I had put one on.

My cutout was good for a tenth in back to back runs.

Was the .1 -.2 gains you are talking about from a cut-out in front of a cat-back exhaust system?

I know cut-outs help, but I didn't know if they would when you already have a free-flow muffler.

Yeah. I have SLP headers, cat-bypass pipes that go into a 3" Flowmaster catback. The cutout is in the I pipe in front of the rear axle.

I had them right after the headers and made over 4 tenths difference. I went from 12.82 to 12.36. My car had a single 2 1/4" pipe instead of a 3" pipe though.

If you want bragging rights to a better ET go for it, if you want better day to day power than the money can be better spent elsewhere. My opinion anyway...

I understand what you're saying about usable power. Kinda like nitrous. BUT...

A cut-out is still one of the most efficient hp parts you can buy. $35 + install for atleast 1-2 tenths quicker. It's pretty hard to beat.

Like he just said, it all depends on how much you'll use it.

A piece that lets you open up the exhaust before the muffler, easier than actually pulling the exhaust apart.

You "cut out" a piece of the exhaust pipe, install this device. Then, at the track, you remove the cap from the device, "uncorking" the exhaust. Makes it less restrictive (in most cases, anyway) and theoretically more powerful, and certainly much louder.

Idealy it would be best right after the y-pipe and before the cat, but if you're going to use it more often than just at the track, you'll probably want to put it just in front of the bend over the rear axle. It will still yeild gains. It will have a lot less vibration back there and will be quieter inside the car. Cut-outs are very popular in on 4th gen fbodies cause they're so cheap and cat-back exhaust systems are so expensive. Most 4th gen guys put em just in front of the back axle and report .1-.2 ET gains.

Also, try going to-

www.installuniversity.com

Once you get there, click on install documents on the left. Then scroll down and click on cutout explanation. They have a pretty cool location for a cutout. The video sounds awesome too. It's a great site, too bad it's almost all LS1 stuff.

i recently bought my camaro and have little money left over for mods. i have seen the cable style cut outs and i was wondering if it would be worth my while to make a home made cut-out out of a 3" throttle body and some exhaust pipe. would the throttle body be too restrictive?

You can buy one from summit for $30. I doubt the one you would build would seal right. It would take a lot of work for it not to leak.

i had one on my car right after i got it... took it to get it installed and told dood to put it in the Ipipe and he put it in the ypipe infront of the cat... the car sounded like crap unless i was WOT... unless it is a track only car put it in the I pipe right before the axle.. much better IMO and sounds better for a daily driver...

I went with the 3 inch Summit Racing cutout....and a 3 inch McCord Power Plate (electric).....its one of the best things I've bought..I love it. It's placed in the intermediate pipe...almost underneath my back passenger seat...after the cats...my cats have been removed anyhow....here is a picture....alot of you guys have probably already seen it....

ouch! whats the point of a cut-out if its way back there after the cats???? if your car sounded bad with open "headers" (manifolds im guessing) then its cuz its stock. i have heard many upon many open headered SBCs and BBCs and usually the ones with some mods (heads, cam, intake) dont sound bad what-so-ever.

how much did that powerplate thing cost ya???

edit: $99 + $6 S&H

i have a mild 355 and runnign strait header sounded bas ***, i now have true duals, and i hope to have 2 3inch cutouts put on this summer. and by the way, its for performance, its just dumb to put it after the cat unless the cat is gutted, just my HO.
