Hooker Comp. Headers?
Hooker Comp. Headers?
Hey guys, I am looking into some headers for my '89 IROC-Z 350. I've been looking at Hooker's Competition headers rather than the super comp. because they are a lot cheaper. Can anyone tell me about these headers? Good quality? Good performance gain? What gauge steel are they made out of? Will I have to remove any large component of my car to get them in? Do they have the places in them to plug in all that damn smog stuff? Also, I noticed that they do not include a y pipe. Where can I get one and how much do you think it might cost? Or maybe an exhaust shop will have one. And is there anything else that I will need to get for the installation of the Comp. headers? Because I know that those $300 edelbrocks include everything but I am just trying to keep the cost down. Oh, one more thing- I live in CA, will I have a prob. running these headers? (I know I would be fine with the super. comps though.) Thanks for the help. -89IRO

I have them and I'm happy with them. They are good quality and fit well, they slip right in, no problems. You will have to remove a few accessories from the engine to get them in, but that's the same with all headers. I believe you can get them with AIR, but not sure. You'll have to get a y-pipe custom made at a muffler shop. Price depends on quality, so shop around before you have a shop do it, they might not have the best quality. As long as you have smog you should be fine.

The Comps are available with A.I.R. by special order only. They come with the O2 bung normally.
Getting a y-pipe fabricated is a real crap shoot. It may well cost you more than the $200 difference between the Comps and Super Comps, and the quality may not be very good (non-mandrel bends, small pipes, etc.).
Since you live in California, go for the Super Comps. They'll fit, they have the CARB tag welded onto the #1 primary pipe, you can install them yourself, and the y-pipe will be high quality.
