shorty headers ?'s

ok in an earlier post I had stated that my y- pipe is falling apart at the seams, with broken studs at the manifolds
the question now is is it cheaper to get a new y-pipe and shorties or headers that have built in y-pipe. with the shorties will the y-pipe bolt on or does it become a custom bent deal
and well generally thats my questions

on my '79 it was no problem
but the engine compartment on a third gen. is much tighter.
will it be possable to finish in a weekend.
everything is still stock so I have all that stuff yet to remove
and junk just wondering what I am getting myself into

Took my brother and I 6 hrs to install my headers in a driveway.

AC was already out though, and we left the emissions stuff off too.

I would suggest getting headers that come with a y-pipe (it's not "built-in", but made to fit the headers). Your factory y-pipe will not mount to any headers. Another option is to get the shorties-only and have a custom y-pipe made to fit them and go to your cat, but the common experience seems to be that that route is more expensive, and the y-pipe you get is not as good.

I would further suggest getting headers/y-pipe made for '86-'91 TPI single-cat, and a cat made for the same. This is the best flowing and most universal system (the dual-cat flows slightly better, but is more expensive, not everyone has y-pipes or cat-backs for them), and yes, it will fit your engine and chassis.

Elimination of the A.I.R. system from the headers is the most common thing left off when headers are installed. If you have emissions inspection, that's not an option. But, if you still have the computer controlled induction and ignition system, you need to keep the O2 sensor, which most shorties have, and any that come with a y-pipe will have (possible exception is the Hedmans w/o A.I.R.). Except for work-around clearance, the A.I.R. system doesn't hurt anything, so you might as well keep it.
