backfiring issue

hello, my car constantly backfires.. its not
really the speed.. its more how much gaz you give
at times.. it also has real crappy gaz mileage..
could it be that the cat isnt good?
the muffler i have is said to be a flowmaster..
theres nothing writen on it.. and it seems to
be just an empty can..

usually if it backfires thru the exhaust it means a valve is hung open somewhere, thru the carb backfires are caused by timing.

Backfire thru the exhaust can be severe exhaust leak and a lack of backpressure, or spark plug wires routed wrong.

Giving it gas sounds like an intake backfire. Could be running lean, improper choke adj, burnt plug wires, timing being off.
