Header Question

I was thinking about putting headers on my 92 RS-LO3 and the owner of a local performance shop didn't recommend them. He said that you wouldn't notice much difference unless you have a true dual exhaust. I know there are plenty of you out there that have done this mod. Are there any noticable gains from doing this? I already have a Flowmaster cat-back installed. Would there still be an improvement in sound? All opinions are welcome.

In my opinion, yes there would be a slight improvement. Throttle response will be slightly better as well. I have a set of Hooker shorty headers now, am very happy with them. I did have to fabricate a new Y pipe however. All of this is on a 92 RS 305 w/TBI.

You won't see huge gains, but there will be some improvement. Expect around 10 extra ponies. More importantly, remember that the exhaust is the last link in the airflow chain. The more efficiently you can expel the exhaust, the more air you can put into the cylinders. This will improve the gains you see from mods on the intake side(intake and camshaft/valvetrain). Replacing the exhaust can be a fairly expensive proposition, but considering the effect it has on your other mods, it is worth it to do it right.

Go to another "performance shop" and find someone who knows what they are talking about. Headers will have more of an impact than this guy gives them credit for.

I've had great results from my exhaust upgrade. I'm currently using Edelbrock TES 6872,no cat and an SLP 3" catback. This same setup was used on my brother's 91 Formula and we both agreed that the change was dramatic on his otherwise stock car. Just don't use the 6875 TBI headers unless you have to. The y pipe is 2.25" diameter.

I have to dissagree with what the guy told you. The headers are the best mod I have done by far. I would strongly suggest them, they are good for at the very least .3 off your 1/4 time.
