Would this custom exhaust sound good?

I had an idea about how to bypass the muffler and make my cat be my "muffler" so it would be loud.Ive heard of other ppl doin this so i was gonna seperate the end of the cat from the i-pipe and run some of that flexible pipe stuff to probably the wheel well so it wouldnt be under the car and all.But i have a 2.8 v6 so dont know if it would sound good or should i do it and get a high flow cat?Or should i just sepearte the cat from the i-pipe and let that be that?Any suggestions.
Thanks

with a V6? youd be better off makking it quiet (stealth). use it for a pimp ride with the ladies, also flex pipe leaks(not good for pimp ride)

The previous owner of my car had the muffler taken off and welded athe intermediate to the tailpipes. It was fairly quiet, even though the I-pipe had big holes rusted through in a few places.

I don't think this helps any, just thought I'd share.

better yet, just unblot the y-pipe all together and run open manifolds!

Open manifolds on a 2.8 would sound nauseating! Extremely obnoxious.

IMO, the best exhaust for a 2.8 would be a high flow cat, with a Dynomax catback. Every 2.8 that I've heard with a Flowmaster catback sounds like crap, and the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler is on the quiet side. You can get it to sound great at low RPM, but no matter what you do, it's not going to sound great at high RPMs. The 2.8 isn't a powerful enough motor to make a really nice exhaust tone, but you can get it to sound pretty decent, as long as you use a cat. It WILL sound horrible with a gutted cat, believe me.

Why do you say the 2.8L isnt powerful enough to make a good exhaust tone? Mine along with alot of other V6ers who own a good exhaust sound like, guess what....your BIG *** V8s! So dont tell me V6s cant sound good. And power wise...Ive beaten a 79 350 Camaro.

Dude dont listen to V8 guys they dont know what they are talking about when it comes to V6s. Post this in the V6 board if you havent already. You will get BETTER responses.

V6 are are capable but still don't sound good, they sound like regular cars if you can hear them at all.I would lose to any car with a crisp V6 just because my 350 HO is so beat and the tranny is a soup sandwich. When everything was working right the only 4,6cyl cars I ever lost to were high performance luxury cars like lexus, porsch,BMW 525i things like that. a stock V6 'stang or f-body never had a chance, they just don't have the low end torque. I know because I raced them all the time. I'm not trying to put anyone down just because they drive a 6 cyl,I'm just trying to give reasonable advice, even if youve got 250 HP it still won't "rumble like a V8" headers, high flow cat and regular performance cat back for V6(no need for 3" pipes!)should sound fine. I would get headers first.money well spent.

There's DEFINITELY a difference in sound between the V6's and the V8's. It's whatever floats-ur-boat
I think that the sixes have more of that German-tone... the low-pitched growl... however, at higher RPMs, I have noticed the 2.8's and the 3.1's approaching a "*****-coffee-can-buzz"--- know what I mean?!
V8's... well, let's just say you can hear the power, attitude, and gasoline for that matter, resonating from the engine to the tailpipes... it's all good for me.
For reference, I've owned a V6 and now have a 305TPI. The 8 wins hands down 'cept when you have a HUGE headache... then accelerating is preferred in a "weak" 6. (had to do that)

Excuse me? I know what I'm talking about, I drove a V6 Camaro 5 speed for 2 1/2 years. It was my first car, and I loved it to death. Your V6 will never sound like an 8, I didn't say it can't sound good, I said it won't sound like a V8! Do V8s have a monopoly on good sounding exhaust tones? I think not. Keep on modding your six until you can afford a real motor, nothing at all wrong with that.

And don't start with ***** 'I can beat your big V8' ****. We are all batting for the same team. The fact that you beat a smogger 180hp 79 Camaro doesn't impress me.

Why by-pass the muffler? Seems like a lot of trouble. Get an Edelbrock RPM Series muffler. It's a glorified glasspack and flows like a straight pipe. Sounds good too, I have one!

A six will NEVER sound like a V8! It just can't generate the same acoustical harmonics. The only sixes that sound good are the huge (470 to 550 CID!) Continental and Lycoming pancake-sixes found on expensive single engine airplanes. Go to your local airport and find a Beechcraft or Cessna 182 or Piper 300. Listen to one of those bad boys fire up and a big block V8 will sound wimpy in comparison.

I have an 8, I still like the sound of a 2.8, 3.1 with the right exhaust, but everybody is right about an 8 and a 6 are definately different sounds.

I had an '85 VW jetta once that sounded kinda bad *** .I think it had a broken muffler or somthing, it was a 1.8 liter 5-spd,it had good pull at 120mph and it was always fun to embarass low performance drivers with they're new mustangs, lexuses, fellow german car drivers(daddys BMW)whatever, on a nice dark narrow windy stretch of road.boy, I really miss that car!!

79 z28 4000lbs (about)
85 v6 3200lbs (about)

If you can't beat one (stock vs stock) your cars a turd, bottom line.

MrJ is right about the exhaust tone. You want to make your v6 loud, simple unbolt the intermediate pipe right before the muffler or remove the bellows inside the muffler. It'll be loud as f**k, but the loss of lowend torque, the nauseous exhaust tone (right around 2grand) is going to drive you nuts, ricers are going to love your car and everyone on your street is going to hate it. I know this for fact, cuz when my one pipes got ripped off I had many many complaints and the only complements I got were from guys in Nissans, Hondas and VWs. And yes it was on my old v6 Camaro.

get blown is right!! V6s need all the the low end torque they can get.I heard one today, a stock 4thgen firebird,it sounded good ,looked sharp, good pimp ride for the ladies why would you want to change the sound?? right about now I'd take a good running six banger over my jallopy '84 V8.........to drive to work anyways,my dog would stay in my dads garage waiting for a new V8 ofcourse
