Smog Pump
Smog Pump
If i cut the belt that operates this, will i notice any performance gains? I have a stock exhaust system, but i've been reading up on what this thing does. I just need clarification. Also will i pass inspection without this belt (i'm guessing no)

ive got an 86 camaro and my smog pump is completely off and rusting at the junk yard. The inspection part just depends if there is an emissions test where you live at and if there is a visual inspection to go with that. i would assume that there will be some performance gains since there would be less drag on the crank.

The smog pump pushes air into the catalytic converter in order to help burn exhaust gases. Removing the pump may cause carbon build up which could plug up the cat. Since VA is an emissions state you could definintely run into problems.

A good compromise is to take out the AIR injector tube extensions. They stick into the exhaust port stream and inhibit gas flow, whether the smog pump is pumping air to the heads or the cat.
You have to remove the AIR injector manifold first. Then reach in with a drill bit (1/4" I think) and make the drill bit "bite" into the tube extension. Then twist and pull it out. Pull all eight out and put the AIR manifold back on. The heads will breath better without those tubes in the way and the smog pump can be kept in for appearance's sake.
Cutting the belt to the pump will remove the small amount of parasitic drag it causes to the motor but the pump MAY freeze from corrosion build-up after a long time. That would suck if you had to put the belt back on for a smog check. Take the pump off and put it in a good box for storage so it won't rust or corrode.

It is so unoticable, just take the belt off when you're at the track. You MAY notice .05 tenths.

Well, i just did some research and i don't have to stay emissions legal, which KICKS MAJOR A$$!!!!
This thing i got from a source at Virginia Tech says, that only the Northern counties near Washington D.C. need to be emissions legal!!! Not me! HAHAHAHA

It happened to me. No problems with inspections for years at the same place (Colonial Heights, VA). One day the regular guy goes bonkers and opens the hood - instant failure for missing emissions stuff. Take previous advice and at least save it in case you ever need it. Some stuff for my 81Z is no longer available even from the Chevy dealer. The 83Z will stay stock.

Cool, someone from nearby
I guess i'll gut it so i can replace some stuff within the 10 days or so?! But i'm gutting the inside of the cat and air pump for sure (now i have to find out how). But i guess i'll go to a "friendlier" shop to watch my back, and bring my friend "Mr. Bribe" aka "Mr Bill". - (Chief Wiggum)

I don't have to worry about emissions but the main purpose of the AIR system is to pump air into the exhaust system when the engine is warming up to lower the emissions. With that knowledge, you should be able to pass emissions if the engine is hot when tested.
Throw a 195 thermostat into the car also before being tested. That's why the factory uses them now also. A hotter running engine lowers emissions but also reduces the power.
