Deepest sounding cat-back without high-end noise?

I'm looking for a cat-back that doesn't have the obnoxious high-end, but just a deep rumble, but opens up nicely when you step on it...I was thinking maybe Edelbrock...I've heard that American Thunder is just plain LOUD, with a lot of obnoxious high end...and I DON'T have tons of money for stuff like Borla...so what are your suggestions? BTW: I've got an 89 RS with an LO3 (305 TBI) - does having a 350 affect exhaust sound? Just curious...this way if I hear a 350 setup, I'll know maybe what to expect...

Flowmaster dual outlet American Thunder 3" catback.

Other than that, I'd say Borla, which is tunable, and damn near twice the price.

What I mean by high-end-noise is high-pitched, tinny sort of sound as opposed to a low, full rumble...anybody have experience with Edelbrock?

i have the Edelborck cat back and i love it. its got a real deep smooth rumble to it right around 2000 rpm's, but it doesnt get a whole lot louder when you hit the high end. it was a major improvement in exhuast flow too, best 232 dollars ive ever spent.

Hey, it's MEANGREEN (different computer)

Yeah, the American Thunder Flowmaster is nice 'n deep, not tinny sounding, and deep at idle, loud as hell wide open throttle, and resonates differently throughout the RPM range. It's actually a really deep droning noise around 2200-2600 RPM when you first put it on, and after it gets broke in, it raises up closer to the 3000 mark. If you get this setup, expect gas mileage to go down some, cuz you'll probably keep your car's revs up a bit cuz you'll dig the sound, discipline, it is a bytch. Got nothing bad to say about the Edelbrock catback either. One of my friends has it on his '95Z, and it is real deep too, just not as loud as the Flowmaster. No lie, if I could do it over again, I'd go with a sleeper-looking, single outlet Delta Flow with no tip, just that gay lookin' droopy dyck tip that flowmaster ships them with. You can set off car alarms with the American Thunder setup, anyways I do. No cat, SLP 1 3/4" headers, 3" y-pipe, all ceramic coated.
I'm done rambling.
Good Luck!

What kinda tips come on the american thunder...the guy at flowmaster says that they come with 3-inch tips. What are they like?

It depends. On just the regular American thunder setup, they look like stock 82-92 Z28 tips (2 pointing downward). Or, you can opt for the now-popular 3" dual tips, which aren't chrome, but stick straight out and are 3" in diameter. If there's a price difference, I'm unaware, but I think I'd stick with the 2 downpipe setup, and cut them later, that way if you like the stock look, you have that option before spending $ on chrome tips.

Well, they don't come any cheaper without the tips, you get them when you buy the exhaust I am getting. They are supposedly 3-inch stainless steel (polished to look like chrome). I would guess if they are polished then they will stick out the back. If I don't like them I guess I could just cut them off. I don't want the exhaust turned down because I was shiny tips and I want the rumble to set off car alarms.

Every engine has a different sound.. different displacements produce different sounds
even the mustang 4.6 and 4.9 have totally different sounds the 4.9 (5.0) has A LOT more ***** to it IMHO. So there will be a noticable difference from 305 to 350. If you want to set off alarms go with my Setup
Hooker Long tube Super Comps with the Mufflex Y pipe and the 4" exhaust with a Spintech Muffler. Spintech has got to be the best muffler i've ever heard. It's amazingly loud while retaining that deep rumble... I dont mean to be a associate... but i dont think i've ever encountered anyone that was dissatisfied with any of their products.

I have 3"inch exhaust from the catback running to a two chamber(40 series) flowmaster muffler feeding out dual 3 1/2 by 18" long chrome tips,it is on the edge of glasspacks or dual exhaust with turbo mufflers,it is definately the loudest thirdgen I have heard, and when you nail it it absolutely screams, real mean idle too,my engine is a 86 305tpi,305's and 350's have the same sound,it all depends on compression ratio and cam profile, like our engines have about a 9:5:1 ratio,if you use this setup YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT
