stupid question...

hey, i've got an rs305 tbi. comes with the dual. im looking for the *best* exhaust setup i can get. i was gonna get a dual catback setup, and tes headers. what i dont really get is the y-pipe. should i get a single exhaust catback if i were to go with the tes, or what? also if i were to get a catback system like flowmaster american thunder, does that include a free flowing cat? sorry if this is a really dumb question or has been covered, im just startin mods on this and i dont wanna get it wrong. thanks for any help!!

What do you mean your RS comes with the dual??

Search this message board for other threads dealing with the "best" exhaust and you'll see everyone's opinion and setup.

no no no .....hes sayin RSs dont get duals. not TRUE duals....it goes exhaust manifolds, y pipe....(connects em into 1).....cat, Intermediate pipe, over the axle pipe, muffler, 2 tailpipes.

as for a good setup.
Headers (hooker, slp, edelbrock, etc)
Y pipe (if the headers are shorties it comes with a y pipe, if they are long tubes like some Hookers, and headmens...they dont)
Hi Flow cat (random tech, dynomax, etc)
3" exhaust (flowmaster, eh, hooker, dynomax, edelbrock etc)
good luck bro

Man if my camaro were a rice-rocket all those mods would give me what...easily 50-60 hp!!!

Heres the deal on your exhaust. It comes out your engine into your exhaust manifolds, then it flows to to your factory Y pipe, at the end of the Y pipe the exhaust goes into a single catalitic converter. From the cat you have a single pipe that runs back to your muffler. You have the one pipe that brings exhuast into the muffler and then you have two pipes that let exhaust out of your muffler. Thats how your stock setup works. Im asuming that you think you have "dual" exhaust because you have to exhaust tips. That is not true dual exhaust, just dual exit exhaust. A true dual exhaust is one where each exhaust manifold exits into its own pipe and you have two main pipes that run into two mufflers and then exit.
So to answer your question, the edelbrock TES headers plus Y pipe runs kinda like your stock system, but you get headers. A cat back system replaces the pipe that comes out of the catalitic converter, the muffler, and the exit pipes. If you want a high flow cat you have to buy it by itself. The header system and most cat back systems do not include a cat.
Now for what you should run:
For a header system, you need to run headers with a 1 and 5/8 inch primary pipe. SLP is the best IMO. They are stainless steel and wont rust Their kit includes the headers and the Y-pipe. It is also emmisions friendly. The next best would probably be the Edelbrock TES system. thats what i have on my car and i can't complain. its cheaper then the SLP system, but Id go SLP if i could afford it.
As for a high flow cat, you got 1 of 2 options. If you want to run a cat, get a Random Technology. They are the best, and they last a lot longer then a car sound, even though car sounds outflow them by just a little bit. I have heard of car sounds breaking down within a year. There is also Catco cats which dont flow as well as the Random Technology ones. OR, you could just gut your cat and run a heated O2 sensor. Thats what I did. runs pretty good and its loud. If you dont have to worry about emmisions testing, thats what id do to save cash on a cat.
As for a cat back system, there are many ways to go. Many of these systems can have either single or dual exits. The single exits tend to flow a little better, but if you want the look of dual, go dual. Lets not kid ourselves, you got a 305 and your not gona feel the 2 or 3 hp more that you might get with a single exhaust over a dual. Again, if you have cash, the best system is the Borla cat back setup. They have a really good sound and they are stainless steel too so you dont have to worry about rust. Then you can go flowmaster too. They are aluminized steel i think. They have a sound that people either love or they hate. It kinda sounds like a nascar car. I am running a flowmaster, only cause thats what came on my car. If you want a muscle car sound, you could try a dynomax catback. i hear they have a good sound.

Hope this helps. Good luck

i like the SLP stainless headers without the AIR tubes, performance and looks wise. go with the edelbrock ones if you want an easy instal and if you want 'em legal. gut the cat...and get a good cat-back...there are a million to choose from, but anything form flowmaster or edelbrock will be good.
