removing cat make emmisions illegal?

ive heard that removing your cat would keep your car from passing emmisions tests. Is this true? My car is an 84 by the way so does the test even deal with an older car like mine? thanks

It will be hard to pass without one, and each piece of emissions equipment removed can result in a $2500 fine maximum. If you live in a state with inspections, I'd leave it alone. If you live in a state without them, gut whatever you want.

If you only have a visual inspection, you can sneak by. Just don't make it really obvious. If you have a sniffer test, it will fail, since the cat is the main emissions thing on our cars.
