Flowmasters? R they any good?
hello,
I have a 92' camaro with a worked 88 305 TPI the induction has been modified as for the exhuast i have edelbrock TES headers, Free flowing catalityc converter and an american thunder flowmaster exhaust system. I know there notoriously restrictive but im not gonna deny i bought them for the noise. Am i being foolish or did i make the right decision. I know i could fo gotten borla but too expensive did any of u guys who have flowmaster like it and felt a difference.

They aren't notoriously restrictive. The difference in flow between most aftermarket exhausts is miniscule. The single in/out versions do flow noticeably better, though.

Flowmasters are one of the best flowing mufflers made, besides Borla. You want less restrictions? Run open headers or true dual 3" exhaust.
You could get more flow if you had a Dynomax Super Turbo. They are really cheap performance mufflers and have a very high flow rate.
I must admit, I chose the Flowmaster over the Dynomax for sound also. A quiet car is just not fun. When i really get my engine beefed up i'll get the Dynomax and make my car a sleeper!

hey 84 transam?? how you gonna make a trans am a sleeper. i mean people see these cars and expect speed. i have a 91 buick century dail driver that i am abou to put a 3.8 supercharged v6 in with a boost in output for the supercharger
now thats a sleeper
whod expect to get wasted by a 4 door white grandma car

Well, my other sleeper project is a true "sleeper" i haven't really figured it out yet, but when i get either a 350 or 383 in my Trans Am, the LG4 is being built up and put in my little brothers 94 Taurus Wagon, that is gonna be wild!
As for the Trans Am being a sleeper, most people around here see an old car, and think 2 things, slow and POS. It's gonna look stock, be Corvette fast.

Get an Edelbrock RPM Series muffler if you want something that really flows and still keeps the volume down to a legal level. I'm surprised when people buy the TES headers but overlook Edelbrock's mufflers.

Open headers allow huge amounts of reversion back to the heads at lower RPMs and kill tons of torque.
For the meantime I run a straight-through Borla which does very well. I plan to work with Mr Mccord on a new muffler design with 0-backpressure and near-0 reversion... that will take some time to produce I know.
I will just say Flowmasters are decent at blocking reversion, but not so good on flow. Most people compensate for the flow by going bigger on the diameter which ends up being very loud.
just my input.
good luck

I have a flowmaster 3" single outlet, dual cats. The first mod I did.The difference was very noticable from stock.
I'm happy with it. I immagine the HP/TQ gains difference between aftermarket catback set-ups is miniscule.I guess it depends on your mods and how your car responds to it.

Mods:SLP air foil,K&N Filter,All Accel ignition parts,Hypertech Thermomaster chip,Stat,Fan switch.Flowmaster 3" Cat-back exhaust,TB coolant bypass, Centerforce clutch.
Weight delete:Back seat-backs,spare tire.
Near future plans:Some runs at Raceway Park for a time slip, After headers install. Before cam+heads mods.

the single outlet 3" Flowmaster is enough for a 305 engine naturally aspirated. I doubt you are giving up more than 5 horsepower with that one.
The dual-outlets are worse. A larger engine would need a better flowing muffler.

wow thanks for all your suggestions. U see i havent put the worked motor yet, should be in in about 2 weeks and the flowmaster is in my garage and its a single 3 inch with a dual tip i guess i spent $280 for nothing. Oh well i guess ill sacrifice some horsepower for the noise level of a flowmaster.
I just got a Flowmaster 40 series muffler put on my car today, its a single in dual out, not true dual exhaust but I could tell that it improved the proformance on my car, my acceleration is a lot better and the exterior resonance is great, but the interior resonance is pretty much the same as it was before.

I've gotta agree with The ODB.. A shop in town did some flow testing and Flowmasters aren't masters at all at flowing. Spintech on the otherhand flowed a lot more. I run a 3 inch single in/out race version, it's almost like a leaf blower at idle and sounds great
I keep seeing posts with people using a 40 series single in and dual outlet. I thought the only dual outlet for our cars was the 80 series crossflow? Are you guys using the single inlet (rightside), dual outlets (leftside) 40 series? Just curious.

I had an '89 buick century with the 3.3 V-6 and that car was a sleeper! I beat people all the time in my grandma ride. It was as fast if not faster than my stock TBI 305. A 3.8 will make it crazy fast! Good luck and post your results.
Sleepers are sweet. First car i wanted was a Monte Carlo which has a sleeper look to it, and the 305 helps a bit. My friend in town has a beat up 67 Olds 442 with a new Olds 455. That thing looks like a slow POS but does over 100 foot burnouts. Also beat a Viper until he ran out of gears!! [3 vs. 6]
