Removing CAT?

I have been reading posts about gutting cats. I have a '91 formula with the 5.7L and I have dual converters. There is an emissions hose (i'm assuming) that is piped into both the cats. Is it possible to completely remove the cats from this system. I assume this emmision pipe hooks up to some sort of sensor or diaphram, is there any way to take the converters out and "trick" the system into thinking they are there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Those small pipes you are talking about go to the AIR system, and if you're already removing the cats you sure as hell oughta take the smog pump and all its related equipment off to clean up the engine compartment. Just put some brass pipe plugs in the manifolds. You can definitely remove the cats, you'll just have to fab up something to weld in their place (good luck trying to find a muffler shop to do this for you). Hope this helps.

I forgot to add that neither the removal of the AIR system or the cats should cause any problems with your computer. But I hope you don't have to go through an emissions check .

I removed mine and nothing bad happened. I still have the emissions bullsh*t under my hood, I'll remove when I know for sure I can plug the holes on the manifolds. If I were you I would by the off road pipe so it'll bolt up instead of hacking at your exhaust and welding it all up. Try to keep the cat in good shape when you take it off just in case you need it later.

I just did all of this last weekend.I took all of the stuff off just like JETHROIROC said(but i followed the directions in the tech article on this site), and I took my car to a local repair shop and they welded me a piece of pipe in the place of the cat. They said they could do it as long as they didn't have to take the cat off. But if you think no body will do that, cut your cat off in a straight line, with the rest of your exhaust system measure the length of pipe you need, go to a muffler shop and tell them the lengths of pipe you need and tell them to flair the ends, take the pipe home and clamp it on.

I removed my cat and failed emissions. Then I put a new cat on and passed with flying colors.
