What do y'all think of this idea?
When I get around to putting my exhaust system on, I really don't want to waste my money on a cat since I don't have any of the rest of the emissions equipment. I think what I will do is pick up an old cat from the junkyard and tear it apart so it's just the shell. Then, I'll just have the muffler shop weld the pipe all the way to the muffler and weld the cat shell to the pipe. That way, if an inspection person looks undeneath the car, it'll at least pass visual inspection. Around here, 1 out of 20 places actually know what the emissions equipment under the hood looks like anyway. All they care about is that there is a cat, and there aren't any holes in the pipe or muffler.

if you take an empty cat and an exhaust system to a local muffler shop they will NOT weld it in for you because they can have their buisness shut down because it's illegal. if you take a new hig flow cat they would weld that in but not an empty shell. you'd have to do it yourself.

Just to let you know, a junk yard will not sell you a used CAT, at least they won't here in AZ. Also, if you try to rip the shell appart, you'll tear up the shell. I already tried. What I did was took one of the cats that I blew and finished gutting it out. Once it was empty, it used a pipe expander and expanded it JUST enough to slip a 2.25 pipe inside of it. Don't expand it too much or you will break the pipe. Once that's done, weld it up and nobody can tell unless they are looking for it. Just remember, if you do this, to take your time.

Thanks guys. I'll have to see if the junkyards around here will sell a used cat or not. I ought to be able to take care of the rest.
