Anyone know how hot the air is coming out of the AIR pump?

I'm looking to replace my steel line with either a rubber or silicon hose in order to clean up the engine compartment. I don't want to have to bend pipe and then get fittings and all that crap associated with metal piping so I'm curious as to how hot the air gets. I don't think it gets that hot because the Helm Manual says to detach the hose and feel for air coming out as a way of trouble shooting but I just want to make sure...

I've worked on mine before and the air is not even hot to the touch.

Yeah, any old rubber hose should work, the air coming out is going to be the same temp as the air that went in.

What about the exhaust manifold, could having the rubber hose that close damage the hose? Just a thought.. Thanks

Yes it could, and if for some reason a check valve in the AIR system fails you may have a problem as well. The air itself isn't hot, so you should be OK if you route the hose away from hot areas and blow through the check valves to ensure they flow only one (the right one) direction. Hope this helps.

Thanks again guys, I'm going to keep it pretty far away from the exhaust - but I'm kinda wondering about where it attaches to the cat, I bet that gets pretty damn hot. I have to check my valves as well...

Thanks,

Steve

Oh, if you're running a rubber hose to the cat I would definitely be concerned about that. Grab some Thermo-Flex heat shield sleeving for the hose from Jeg's or Summit to put on the last six inches of the hose down by the cats, or some thermal wrap and maybe you'll be OK. I'm still worried about you having a melted hose where it directly attaches to the cat. May want to use a short piece of steel tubing and then attach the hose to run the rest of the way to the check valve, and then hose to the diverter valve box. I would use pipe all the way to the check valve, because exhaust will back up to those, both from the manifold tubes and from the cat. After the check valve rubber hose will do nicely, but before it I think you may have a disaster. I see what you're talking about now and it concerns me. Anyone else think this may be a problem?

Well, here's what I'm looking to do: I am cutting off the AIR tubes to my headers. I'm going to run a single pipe/hose back to the collector instead of eight spaghetti pipes all over the damn place. I am moving the diverter valve crap from where they reside on top of my pretty engine, to somewhere underneath, or back by the heater box - anywhere but up top, looking like *** .

I figure if I use about 12 inches of pipe from the cat to hose I should be okay - barring regular rubber I could always go with silicon hosing which can withstand more extreme temps...

How's that sound?

That sounds OK if there isn't too much exhaust backing up to those check valves if you have rubber before them. Here's an idea: Use the 12 inches of pipe to the cat like you said, then the check valve, then the hose after the check valve the rest of the way to the diverter box. That should be your safest bet to avoid meltdown. Hope this helps and good luck!
