dual exhaust with 1 muffler?

i am trying to figure out a way to run true dual exhaust exiting out the back without clearance problems. anyway, i was looking at the flowmaster 80 series muffler . click on the .pdf link to view each muffler. i am talking about the part#42582. it would be mounted transversely where the stock muffler is located and have 2 inlets and outlets with tailpipes exiting out the back. how does this flow compared to using 2 mufflers? would i still want an h-pipe with this setup....im assuming i would, but just making sure. anyone have experience with this setup?

I thought having "true" duals, meant having 2 mufflers?

that setup would work, but you are also going to have to consider how you are going to run both pipes over the axle. if you dont weld them up yourself, this can get expensive quickly. as for flow, it wont flow as well as a dual exhaust setup with a good high flow muffler on each pipe. however, the setup you are considering will definetly out flow the stock setup. running the pipes will be the only "tricky" part, depending on what you can do yourself. having the muffler in the stock location should eliminate any ground clearance issues provided you run the pipes up close to the floor boards or down the tranny tunnel. anyway, good luck with the project.

my dad and i will be doing everything ourselves. so compared to 2 flowmaster mufflers...this would flow less if i understand correctly? i think this is the exception to the rule mark, but hey i could be completely wrong . the muffler im talking about has 2 separate entities the whole time. i dont think they both go through the same path in the muffler....i think there is 2 separate paths they take within the muffler. id like to know if im right there or not...can anyone clear that up? if they do both take the same path inside the muffler, it wouldnt be true dual exhaust.

After all the work of getting both pipes all the way to the rear of your car, I would run two seperate mufflers. It can be done. A stock 82 camaro exhaust has 2 mufflers. It's not dual exhaust though. It has a Y in the rear that feeds 2 mufflers. I can't find a picture, but it works something like this. The exhaust inlets for both mufflers are near the center of the car. The mufflers point toward the sides of the car, the outlet then turns toward the back and exits in the normal location. There are other ways to accomplish this, the trick is finding good small(short) mufflers.

oh yeah, there are certainly many ways to run dual exhaust on a 3rd gen. its all about how much you want to spend and how creative you want to get. i went with cheap, i have true 2.5" dual exhaust with 2 hooker aerochambers that dump before the rear axle. it performs very well and sounds amazing.

Actually, i recall thinking about doing the exact same thing with my car when i first saw that pdf file a few months ago. I'm still curious. If you go with it, please post pics. And some sound files too.

i figured out a way to use 2 40 series delta flows that had real good clearance and performance which would work better. however, i decided to go with a 3" single flowmaster delta force II catback because it would save me a lot of time and work. but, ill probably post pics and sound clips of that when its finished.
