Hook up 305 to stock 2.8 exhaust?

Just put H.O. 305 into 82 Camaro. Got a Y-pipe from junk yard for the 305 with catylic converter. I am going to have this hooked up to the stock single outlet v-6 exhaust system. Does anybody know the pipe diameter of the v-6 system? Does the dual outlet muffler offer any gains over the single since the rest of the exhaust is single anyway whether it is a v-8 or v-6. Just how much power am I going to lose with this exhaust. Like I said this is just temporary until I get the money gathered up for a real exhaust. Is it possible to put a true dual exhaust on this car like the 70's camaro's could have put on them? Thanks for any responses!

As long as you have a y-pipe and cat from a low-output 305 (vin H), it should bolt right up to the V6 cat-back. It will be restrictive, but it will work. If you have the HO y-pipe and cat (Vin G), then it will not bolt up since the y-pipe is a 3" pipe in squished into an oval shape. You could have it adapted for the time being until you get a better exhaust.

As far as dual exhaust goes, it has been done, but usually not done well. These cars were really not built for a dual exhaust. A really good 3" system will support most street applications.

my 305 came with v6 exaust stock, 2.25" diameter pipe. They pulled every trick in the book to put the 305 TBI below the HP of the 305 TPI and 350 TPI.

My '82 V6 cat-back was 1-7/8". Hooking a V8 up to that is going to be VERY restrictive, and will kill what power the 305 could put out.

Get a better exhaust while you're at it.
