I just found out that Random Technology makes 3.5 and 4" cats, so maybe this pipe dream will become reality...Now i just wonder how much this converter will set me back...

Well, it's good that you found someone who makes
them. I have the 3" Random Tech. cat on my Camaro.
It's $250.00! So, I bet the 4" is about $300.00! Maybe
more.

Wow 4" cats.. This could bring out a few questions
Im already thinking of a sweet exhaust system now.. But not a 4" catback system.. But the 4" cat could work..

Regards to the emissions comment.. What are you exactly relating this to? the diameter of the Catback or the cat itself not being designed for our cars? Remember have facts before you can qoute that Just for get..

I think camaro_nut was talking about if I could not find the larger cat, that I may have had to run w/o one.

I am thinking about having a custom 3" y-pipe made up, that goes into either 3.5 or 4" to the cat, and then runs to my 3.5" catback. Do you think a 4" y-pipe and cat would be too much, or should I just try to stay with 3.5"?

Four cylinders flowing into twin 3" pipes? Why do you need that much y-pipe for a 350 engine? Your 1 5/8" header pipes will restrict the exhaust more than a 3" y-pipe will. What is it you're building here?

My headers are 1 3/4" SLP's flowing into custom 2.5" y-pipes into Magnaflow 2.5" cats, then into a custom 3.5" I-pipe, a 3.5" race muffler, then narrowing down to 3" into a Magaflow f-body muffler with 2.5" outlets. In my opinion, the only reason to go larger than that is if you have a larger engine, or you're running a high boost turbo or blower. But what do I know?

Lastly, you should have asked this question in a separate topic. This topic is for updating the FAQ pages and providing more info about what I said in the first post, not for asking questions. Thank you.

You are very wrong and miss-guided. Maybe you should practice what you preach and do a little reasearch on exhaust systems and how they work.

Please don't school me, as I am not prepared for the embarrassment. Please get rid of the caps and refrain from spouting off meaningless jargon without further explanation. What are you trying to teach us?

I bought the edelbrock kit for my 89 RS but I ordered the ones for the TPI cuz I wanted the 3"Y-pipe. I will fab up a hot air tube for the air cleaner. As for the rest of the exhaust I'm gonna use a 3" cat and a 3"system but undecided which muffler I'm gonna use. I'm NOT a fan of Flowmaster so either a dynomax muffler or a spintech. I may try Edelbrock's new SDT muffler.

Anybody use the edelbrock headers?

Ive got the tubular exhaust nickel plated edelbrock exhaust. Im curious to what you mean by ordering the ones for tpi? I know theres the system for dual cats or single cat, but i thought all tubular exhaust sytems were all the same. Are you running the tubular exhaust system or no?

the TBI system uses a smaller y pipe than the TPI system. Also the TBI system has a provision for the thermal air cleaner heat tube, the TPI system does not. I wanted the bigger y pipe so I ordered the TPI system.

Yes. You want to order the TPI setup so that you do not get the stock sized 2.25" y-pipe. Everything else is the same on them. ALso, all 3rd gens used a single 02 senor mounted in the driver side header/manifold.

I have it and love it. It sounds nothing like Flowmaster
and I have gotten plenty of compliments on the sound of it.
The drawbacks are the price, especially for the dual
outlet system. I don't have a good sound clip yet, but
I am working on it.

I dont know if this was said or not but the air pipes are only there and along with the pump is to pump air down into the cat to make the car warm up faster and get a little better of performance.

Once again, this thread is for posting answers to frequently asked questions about headers and exhaust systems, not for asking more questions. If you have a question that isnt answered by doing a search, then please start a new thread and ask your question.

So if I order headers through summit for a 82-92 5.7L Camaro, will I have to weld in a o2 sensor? Or do most designs for our cars alreadly have one welded in? Looking for a header for a mid 300 HP (TPI) 90-92 Camaro. Any suggestions?

I have set of Mr. Gasket headers but they have a 2.5 inch collector(inside diameter), but I'm afraid thats too small. ???????

Hedman Longtubes are pretty good for the price, but I'd get the elites(model line that's just ceramic coated) as they aren't that expensive either.

If getting longtubes and you have emmissions regulations in your state(especially if they do a visual check) then you will not pass. You also have to custom fab a y-pipe for longtubes. Depending on what enging/setup you have I'd just go for hooker shorties pn. HOK-2055. Unless you are running a fairly modded 305, or a mild 350, I doubt that you would like the results that longtubes would give you.

so i read through this thread and have a question and 2 comments,

Q: what is an I-pipe?, is it just a single pipe exhaust?
comments: first off, anybody who has thier cat on because they dont think that 5hp will increase thier performance is not enough of a hp junkie . the second is regarding the 3" or 2.75' pipes, have you been measuring the Inside diameter or the outside diameter, im too lazy to go under my car and look but commonly pipes are measured by thier ID, the 3" sounds like it might be the OD because the wall thickness is 1/8". mayb somebody should measure when they have thier exhaust apart next eh?

I was considering Edelbrock TES shorties with Y pipe.....does anyone have this setup so I can know if it is worth it? It looks like a very nice unit and it is 50 state legal.

Did you read the first post of this thread where I said Edelbrocks are some of the worst designed headers for our cars, especially their LG4/L03 versions? Go with Hooker 2055's instead, or SLP's. Do a search on this board and you'll see all the reasons why they are not the best.

why does everybody like 3 inch exhaust when you can easily go bigger. Will a 3.5 or a 4 inch make enough of a difference to pay the extra money for it?

A 3" exhaust is just fine for a stock or mild thirdgen. If you go larger, it has something to do with physics that I dont understand. The exhaust gas slows down in a larger pipe, if there isnt enough exhaust to fill it, and that reduces the scavenging effect, which reduces efficiency. When you add a bigger cam, better heads, a larger cubic inch engine, or add a blower/turbo, then you have more exhaust and can benefit from a larger exhaust system.

I am a mech engineer and Kevin91Z is right. I have studied plenty of flow problems in classes and it is true. If you go too big you will slow the flow and do the oposite of what you want. You need to keep the velocity of the gas high. This means keeping the diameter under control. If you go too big you will loose preasure, then you have the gas just roaming around in there (not literally). You want it to keep moving, and fast. If the pipe is smaller, (right size) the exhaust pulses can line up, like waiting in line and get shoved out in an orderly fashion (scavaging effect).

I persoannly have a 385 with a hug cam, right now I have dumps on there and it is too loud, but if I put my hand under the outlet, it gets shoved to the ground, at idle. This thing REALLY moves a lot of air.

I am going to either make of buy a mufflex 4" cat-back. (my motor makes 500+HP)

Unless you have a totally differnt motor like me, going bigger than 3" is just going to hurt you.

my '86 is all stock and I'm wanting headers/cat/muffler. I've had one recommendation for Edelbrock headers. Would anyone like to share recommendations? Thanks!

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Hey everyone. I have a 1989 IROC-Z Camaro and I'm from Pennsylvania. The guy at the local mechanics shop told me that all he has to do is see everything as working and that its in proper hook up order. I have a 305 TBI and I'm having a friend of mine from Maryland (SM Racing) help me out with outfitting a supercharger and carb and all that and tuning it, he already gave me some ported and flowed 350/305TBI heads for exhaust. So, I have a few questions.

1. No true dual exhaust then? Even with o2 sensor in same spot?:P
2. Air tubes, I'm guessing I can block them off easily...no biggy.
3. What am I going to need for all this added airflow? Is the Y pipe setup going to be alright?
4. I know, I know roots supercharger isn't legal, but its easily changeable when i leave all the electronics there, just not functional.
5. How wide should the pipes be, keeping clearance and all in mind.

Remember folks, I'm going to emission this once a year, I just need to know how I can look good for the people who will emission it, keeping in mind its only visual. ---By this I mean nothing actually has to WORK, just appear to be in working order.---

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

You guys arent serious, right?

suh-wheat_86305: Read the first posts of this thread, and your questions will be answered.

iroc192: Your question should have been asked in a separate thread. But first you need to search. Removing/disabling emissions equipment violates federal laws.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Thanks for the info on "best headers", Kevin91Z!

I'm curious as to your particular dislikes for the Edelbrock headers. I've heard good things about them, like better fit, y-pipe included and thicker flanges.

Thanks!

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

you helped me out before... telling me to replace a tranny mount, which i did and it took care of the thumping at( and neare) full throttle and generally smoothed things out.
so... I remeber coming across some tips for installing headers... i think a ground-down 15mm wrech was recommended. I can't seem to find the posting again.
would you know any good tips for installing headers? I know you didn't like the Edelbrock too much, but for a variety of considerations, I went with ceramic coated TES, a high flow cat and Edelbrock cat bak... everything from collectors back is 3", single cat. Also ordered a hypertech chip.... can't wait.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

has anyone tried the edelbrock TES system, they look like a nice setup,a little pricey maybe but they look like a complete kit and are tri coated?I just bought my first 3 generation its an 89 LB9 formula and its bone stock and I figure the exhaust is the best place start.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

no edelbrock, theyre ok in quality and fit but i hate the collector set up.youre putting headers on to free up exhaust,so you have a nice 1 5/8 primary tube going down to i think a 3 inch collector on edelbrock(could be smaller) anywas look where collector meets y pipe.it goes down to i beleive a 2 1'4" donut t.why choke it down that much.look for stuff with a beter collector set up.
some folk dont like heddmans but they used to have a true 3 inch collector with a flange but theyre prone to leaks so heddman switched to a donut style and they too drop opening size but not much.slp rock also but same thing and are pricey.

Did you even read the posts in this thread where I say Edelbrocks suck and stay away from them?

Go for the Hooker 2055's. *MUCH* better quality and performance.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

ok, i have an 83 firebird s/e with im guessing an LG4, feel more around 200hp than it does 150hp

anywho, im broke *** poor and im scavenging for headers

i found a set thats specifically for 3rd gens that i can afford, its just there used and dont come with collectors or bolts, and the other set just says it wont work on angle plugs
http://www.cfrperformance.com/

would those work or no?

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

kevin I read that, also read lots of people in this forum put down edelbrock stuff, can't understand why, have done lots of older muscle cars in the past, used lots of edelbrock parts, had great luck with them.I'm looking for quality apearance, fit and long lasting pieces.I wrench all day I don't want to be wrenching all night keeping the hooker parts from leaking, and anthony thanks for your input, appreciate good input and reasoning behind why you don't like things instead of just saying they suck,I figure putting headers of any style will improve flow, but as I found on this(my first 3rd gen F-body that running real duals is near imposible unless you want to make a mess I don't think that the small reduction of flow there once teamed up with a mandrel bent 3 inch back to a muffler will hinder me much.SLP stuff seems to be so very over priced.but so do all the parts for these cars.anyhow sorry for the long wind and thanks for the input.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

Ok, I have to apologize. Way back when I made this post, I thought I put in the difference between the different headers. Come to find out, after rereading it, that was a totally different thread, not this one. I'm so embarassed.

Do a search for "Edelbrock vs SLP headers" and you'll see the post I made. Unfortunately, the website links to the pictures dont work anymore, but the text is still there.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?

thats cool kevin,I did some reading on the hooker 2055 and they are a little cheaper and a better looking y-pipe.the painted ones are about $30 cheaper and I read they have fixed there sealing problems.I think thats the way I will go,I do appriciate the info.like I said I haven't had the car long and most of my previouse ones were 2 gen cars.does the cat on these cars have an air pipe down to them?
