excellant thanks,so when buying a high flow converter I'll need one that has the air pipe.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I am putting togeather a twin turbo 350 and got tired of looking for decent headers so we welded up our own equal legnth and front turbo flange-I used 2" tubes and a 4" collector-my question is why can't I use a square 4" collector tube out of 1/8 thich stock- this would help disapate heat and be easy to reduce to a t4 flange-our headers will fit any applacation you can use shorties on and will work on a/c cars also

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I have the Hooker 2210 on my Camaro with a little custom modification for that dreadful # 7 plug that usually causes problems or require a shorty plug. I had mine cut and extended to make a little more room. My Y-Pipe was custom made "mandrel bent" in Joilet, Il. for under $300. Here are a few pics. The whole system will be ceramic coated as soon as I get back from Korea in March 08.

Hey DLT504!
Finally a long tube install that works. I've seen a LOT a 3rd gen install's (Dyno Don's shorties are some of the best but I want LT's). I particullarly like the cut out's. I can see the best of both worlds here. Fully muffled exhaust in the stock location for cruising and tuned length open headers for track days.
Question: Are those pre fab s-extentions or did you have them made to suit the custom y-pipe?
Was there an option for solenoid activated cut-outs?

The cutouts are from Summit Racing, already fab. I have electrical cut outs from McCord. Here is a link to both items.

DTL,
The pipes between the header and the cut out look like aftermarket s-extentions.
Or are they custom like the y-pipe?

I have MagnaFlow's transition Y-Pipe, cost about $27.00. Scroll down to the Magnaflow pipe and select the proper pipe. I have the 124-10798 Magnaflow Transition Y-Pipe, 3" inlets / 3" outlet, 10" length.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Thanks for the info DTL.
My 86 IROC is heading to the fab shop in the next couple of weeks so the pics go a long way.
Now the big question! Do you have any 1/4 mile performance data (I've checked your dyno sheets) with full exhaust as compared to the cut outs open?
I can see a couple of tenths in the 60' times if the exhaust tuning goes like I anticipate.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Once again, this thread is NOT for asking what you should put on your car. This thread is for reading about the differences between header and exhaust choices and making your own decision about what you should put on your car. If you still have questions after reading this thread, then you can start a new one.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
You're absolutely right. This FORUM is the place to ask questions about the exhaust setup on your thirdgen.
But, this particular THREAD is not for asking questions. It is for providing info on the best bang-for-the-buck exhaust systems based on personal experiences with them.
If you have a question, start a new thread. If you have something to add to the discussion about exhaust systems mentioned in this thread, you can post it here.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I just got a picture of this so I thought I'd share for those trying to figure out how much work is needed to install the Hedman long tubes.
The driver's side header hits the A-arm perch. Solution - cutting off a piece of useless metal protruding out right there. This bothered me for a while until I saw exactly what needed to be done and I realized it wasn't that big a deal, to me anyway.
And yes, my A-arm bolts are backwards, I know.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I went with 1 3/4" Hooker Super Comps (long tube) with 3" pipes into two-chamber Flowmasters dumping at the rear axle. One of the best sounding setups in my opinion, well next to open headers, hehe.
I put tail pipes on it at one point when I was having to haul the kids around, and it killed the power, not to mention made it more cackly sounding. I would definately go with setups with the mufflers dumping before the rear axle for cars that have healthy motors.
Stock setups, the best I had was a Y pipe running in to 3" pipe back to a Flowmaster original replacement muffler. It gives it a nice sound, actually pretty loud for a "one in two out" setup. I thought about going back to this since my kids now want to ride with me and I'm sick of smelling like exhaust.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Hooker headers makes a header that turns in the stock location toward the passengers side of the car, they are ceramic coated, super comp, long tube headers part number 2138-1 you can get them at www.holley.com. Dynomax makes header back dual exhaust kit on www.summitracing.com and has the headers to fit the kit but doesnt come with mufflers. i had to cut a little on the exhaust to fit the long tubes and to fit the flowmaster 40 series but it sounds awesome. I wanted the tali pipes to go out the back so i rerouted some pipes. the part number on the dynomax pipes is WLK-89009. Like i say they are header back without converters but you will be satisfied!

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Ok, first off it seems this thread hasn't been used in a while so I hope this works. This will be a multi-part two-option question. I have a 91 RS with a 305 only work done to it was a change in the exhaust, now has a magnaflow muffler, straight pipe (sorry emmissions guys). Now I have two choices either keep with the 305 theme, buy another 305 stroke it out to 331 or I have a 350 4 bolt main out of an 86 suburban sitting in my yard i could swap in there. Although this thread is not for motors if anyone can give me their opinions on which I should do I would greatly appreciate it. The other question which does belong in this thread is in either set-up which set of headers and cat should I go with, while keeping the magan flow set-up? Also I have an exhaust shop that does the work for me, can i just go with a custom Y-pipe or should i order one?
#174
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
simple.if you yanking motor no way in hell the 305.stroked or not ,goes back in......period. 350,grab 400 crank any boom.....383...headers,simple,hedman or hooker shortys work fine, edelbrocks are nice units and i think all sell y pipes. buy stuff for what youre driving. long tube headers arent needed for what it sounds like youre doing. plus ground clearence sucks. if youre going to exhaust shop for get y pipe. have em plumb a 2 12" true dual with x pipe. i did, sweet as butterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
If you are going to do a 383, I would go with a set of large long tube headers.
I would also go with the 350 route. As a 305 fan, if you have access to the 350, do it.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
So if I don't get the 1-3/4 short Headers I can't make any power over 300? And how much hp gains can I expect from the 1-3/4 headers compared to the 1-5/8 ones. I'm curious because this is gonna be my first modification and I don't really know alot about performance engines. So yea any help will b appreaciated.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Yes you can certainly make more than 300 horsepower with 1 5/8" headers.
I dont think anyone has done a direct comparison between 1 5/8" headers and 1 3/4" headers. Have they?
I just know the exhaust gasses are hot and want to expand. Larger tube headers help those gasses expand and get out of the engine easier. Up to a certain point of course. You wouldnt put 1 7/8" or bigger headers on a small block unless you're really pushing some air at higher RPMs.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
ok, i have a bit of a Frankenstein set up, a 350 (.06 over) dual plane manifold holley carb ect. now i'm about to replace the heads (current are from the late 80's L98 and aren't worth their weight) the stock pipe was cut about 8in before the cat and replaced (with a new cat) by a 3" single to a rear muffler than two 2.5" pipes out the back. my aim is for 400bhp as this is impossible with original headers and front y-pipe what is my best plan of action (i am on a budget so nothing to expensive) also no emissions here so i intend to kill my cat.

I have a GMPP crate engine (rated 330hp). I think its better to have a little too small(=low RPM torque) than too big IF the car is street driven have automatic gearbox or/and low stall.
Hopefully someone has some dyno results.

i was actually going for a little less street bred, and i have a 5spd so no torque converter to deal with.
anyone know of a good set of long tube headers that will fit a 3rd gen manual decently and let me go over speed bumps?

What is the best route on a performance muffler? I don't want the echo sound, just a deep throaty sound. I have a '84 Trans Am with the 305. I think it is a single muffler dual out. Someone said to go with a magnaflow 40 series??? Any ideas????

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Hooker max flow, magnaflow and the dynomax ultraflow/race magnum are all pretty much the same straight through design, make about the same power for comprable sized mufflers, with slight differences in sound based on the shape of the case, wall thickness, material...
Hooker aerochambers might be slightly more restrictive but are incredible sounding.

I have the Hooker Maxi Flow 3in in & out. It is quiet at idle with 10.7 compression and XFI280 Comp cam, smooth cruise sound 1800-2500rpms but very loud at wide open throttle.

Ok ok well i have heard good and bad for just about every muffler out there so it sounds like just a preference type deal....what do you guys think about flow masters?....i have heard 40 series and they sound good to me.....how restrictive are theses mufflers and does that even really matter for a street car?

Flowmasters sounds good but you will loose performance like about 20hp. Straight through mufflers has the best performance.

I think that 20 horse is a little overkill with the loss......the aerochamber have a nice rumble at idle?....do you have a video by a chance?.....i would like to go with the aerochamber however i want a muffler that has a good sound at idle as well.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I recently bought a dual cat set-up, 1 5/8 air tube headers, 2.5 mandrel y, converters and some pipe after. Will a dual cat fit a single cat car? Is there any modification that will be needed?

Looks pretty good. I see alot of talk about exhaust and I have seen not one mention of TRUE merge collectors??? Why is this, something to due with 3rd gens having a y pipe? The collector is where nearly all power is made in any header other than the pipe diameter and degree of bends. Burns Stainless makes the best merge collectors in the biz(for race applications), you pay for them but you see results good ones! Just curious on this.

I put Jet-Hot coated Edelbrock headers on my 305 RS and noticed about a 5 mpg increase in addition to the nice boost in power and reduced underhood temps.

Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Hi folks, I have an 85 Z28 305 4 brl., this is my first 3rd. Gen. Camaro, I've owned 5 2nd Gen Camaro. But anyway, my question is this. Can I run true dual exhaust on my Z? My plans r Hedman 1n5/8, 3" headers for now, with a Dynamax 2n1/4" dual exhaust kit. I don't have my license at the moment and the car is in a garage across town so I don' get tempted to drive, so I really havent' checked it out.

I would agree with you! Although I have Hooker headers... One thing I woiuld like to recommend is getting them JetHOt Coated... do the research... you will find it is the way to go! Not only in finish durability, but, it cuts your engine bay temp in almost half!
