Headers vs. My Emissions

Hey there, my names Dave, ive got an 89 Firebird 305 TBI, with Cali. Emissions. I've already done the cat back system (Flowmaster) and now its time to move onto the headers. . I found someone that'll do the work, and I found a place to get'em. . .now my problem is what should I get!? I have my eye on Hedmen's. . .but im worried that without the plug ins. . .i.e.. O2 and what not, this will throw my fuel regulation off so it might run reall lean. . and of course thats not good. So should I get the Headers that hedmen makes for 82-92 F-Body. . .that includes the Y-pipe and all the emission plug ups. . .or what? The real deal is, im affraid the guy who is doing the work, might just slap them on, and say its ready to go. . without messing with the emissions. So if I do go with the regular long tubes for $98.99, is there some way to do that without my car running lean? Or do I need to swap out ALL of my emissions. . .OR. . . should I spend the $329.00 and buy the ones that'll just sit right in and hook up?
I am not really worried about performance. . as much as I am into the sound that'll come from them.

This all probably sounds pretty screwy, but im serious, thanks to anyone who replies! I appreciate it!

Your car wont run right without an O2 sensor in the exhaust tract. It works in conjunction with the computer to adjust your air/fuel mixture going into the engine. So, you have to get one with the O2 fitting, and since your in California, you have to have the AIR injection tubes. And for simplicity of installation, the custom set hedman makes for 82-92s would be alot easier than longtubes, although neither is easy. So, this narrows your choices to either getting the shories w/ ypipe or getting the longtubes and not having your car run right and not passing emissions. I think the choice is clear. Sorry about the long post.

You have to have the AIR tubes & O2 sensor fittings in order to pass emissions. So unless you move to another state, you have no other choice. My exhaust is in my sig....I personally think my exhaust sounds awesome (a bit Mustang-ish, but much deeper). Just my opinion.

Hey Guys, thanks a lot for the advice, Actually, since that last post I made ive decided what I was going to go with. I had a long heart to heart talk with the guy thats doing the work, and I am going to get the hedman, shorties. . .the are only 98 bucks and they ahve the O2 plug. . .that and a Y-pipe and I should be ready to go in no time. . . as far as AIR goes, I actually live in kansas, I just lucked out and got a cali car! So we are going to get around those guys. . and everything should be all right.

One more question. . .think I could spend the cash and get Stage 8 locking header bolts, or just use the ones they send with. . . (I'm afraid they might back out after a while.)

Thanks again!

Dave
