87 305 LG8, What Exhaust???
87 305 LG8, What Exhaust???
I have a bone stock 87 Firebird Formula with the LG8 305 motor. I'm looking to replace the exhaust from the headers on back but would like to have full duals with two cats. What will I need to do this and does anyone have some suggestions on what headers or exhaust to use. I was looking at a hooker system but it looks like it is a single with dual tail pipes, and not straight duals. Anyone have some tips??

Welcome,
First off, since you didn't say wheter you have carb or TPI. Carb 305s are LG4 motors and TPI 305s are LB9.
Do a search for duals on this board, and you'll get many topics to read.
Honestly, with that setup you have, the trouble and cost of duals will be more than it's worth.
I'd say just get some Hooker headers and a Hooker cat-back, single exhaust, and you'll be flowing well enough for thatmotor for a while to come.
I have the Hooker cat-back and love it, there's a sound clip in my sig.
Also, check out the regional board for Thirdgen Nationals '03.

Sorry about that engine code thing, I'm not too familiar with all these different names. Anyway it is carbeurated but will be switched over to fuel injection next winter if it proves to be a good idea. I'm looking to make about 350-400 hp at the rear wheels. Will a single exhaust still hold up to this?

350-400 at the rear wheels? Not with a fuel injected 305. Certainly not for a street-driven, daily driver 305.
The recommended system above would support 350-400 flywheel horsepower from a 350. If you really think you need to have that power output at the rear wheels, you'd better figure on more cubes.
Do you need to be emissions-legal? If so, the best system for a high HP would probably come from SLP, and have dual cats at least.
