fit problems for slp headers/y-pipe
fit problems for slp headers/y-pipe
I'm having a little trouble getting my passenger side header to fit the y-pipe perfect and subsequently have a small exhaust leak. I put the headers on the heads tight and connected the y-pipe, I think this weekend I'll unbolt the headers from the heads and get the y-pipe/headers aligned just right, tighten it, and then re-bolt the headers onto the heads. Sound like a logical plan ? Anyone else dealt with this ? Later
You may have to cut the Y-pipe to fit. Check

I had a little trouble when I installed them on my old motor. I had to really wrestle around with the y-pipe to get it to seal up to the collectors. They like to come togther at an angle. If yours are doing the same thing, try drawing the side up to the collector that is furthest from seating on the donut gasket. That worked for me.

when installed my slp headers, I had a fit problem. Apparently, the Y pipe was built too wide for the headers after they were installed to the engine. SLP told me to loosen the headers and install the pipe and the pipe would conform as I tightened up the headers. BULLSH*T I told the rep, as they were being installed to aluminum heads and this difference would pull the threads out of the aluminum. I cut the Y pipe and made a slip fit with it. Then had it removed and welded. SLP told me that they would not cover this mod,,,but I have yet for a problem
Thanks guys, the y-pipe is just a very small bit wide - I think I may be able to manipulate it in today the way 406tpi suggested, then I'll try loosening the headers route. ZZfrmula - would you be kind enough to elaborate a little on how you cut the y-pipe ?
I re-situated the clamp that connects the y-pipe and collector to allow it to pull the side needed first in order to make the two line up. This caused the clamp to come in contact with the car itself. While the exhaust leak is gone, I can now "feel" the exhaust since the exhaust is essentially in contact with the car due to the clamp. I wouldn't imagine this would do any real harm because I really don't want to mess with it unless I get another leak there.
If there is something against something else like you are describing, most likely one of the two things is going to wear a hole sooner or later, just a thought.....
