A buddy of mine had a 77 Cutlass with a 350 in it. Of course, he did mod it up a bit. Put a FULL exhaust on it...flowmasters, AND cats. Yes, it had headers. It also had a cam and heads. This thing was soooo g**damn loud, it sounded like open exhaust...like a damn dragster..but it had full exhaust. His brother, also a friend of mine told me that if it wasnt for the heads and cam, it wouldnt be that loud. So, if he is correct, my guess is that a cam and head job would definetly make the car loud....i rode in this Cutlass, and even at idle at a light it was loud...my car is loud(cat and flowmaster), but that cutlass made my car sound like a baby kitten trying to scream for help over the sound of a freight train, an airliner and 14 monster trucks crushing cars at the local arena all at once. Hope this helps.

i have an 83 crossfire Z28 that i bought with an exhuast system of stock manifolds with new 2.5 in pipe running to a glass pack in place of the CAT then running to the rear with nothing but pipe, dual outlets. i drive downtown next to parked cars and when the tranny shifts into OD at like 30 or 35 mph, 1000 RPM it sets off a lot of car alarms
, this set-up is very loud at idle and screams when you get on it. i bought some non-emission headers at a swap meet for 50 bucks that im gonna throw on when i convert to a carb, i think they are the hookers. i'd say that it prolly isn't the best idea to have an exhuast like mine since i get a funny look from the local police everytime i drive by one. haven't been busted yet but my time will come i'm sure, lol

I had heads, porting, cam and all the stuff in my signature, it was loud, very loud. and when i put the 305 back in, quiet. so it depends on the amount of the intake charge, that is what i believe.

up at my job, there is a wholesale engine shop next door, and several of the guys that work there have drag cars. They are always out behind their shop revving them up and tuning.
One of the cars is an old 280Z with a 327. That thing is f***ing LOUD. another guy has a Chevy II, not sure what is in it, but it is louder than the 280Z.
By loud i mean that when these cars are idling about 300 feet away, i can hear them through about three 1 ft. thick concrete walls!!!!
I have come to the conclusion that a serious cam and heads will really help your sound throughout the powerband.

My buddy runs a 350 with a mystery cam and a set of angle plug bowtie heads and that thng is mental loud. It has a set of headers that run into 3" flowpaths and sidepipes. It was loud enough that I though the traun was going by when he idled into my driveway!!

in my 87 z, 305 tpi, i had a full manifold back 3 inch with a random tech 3" cat and a 3 in dual outlet flowmaster, and at 800 rpms it was louder than my 1000 watt sound with the haatch open, standing in back of course, all with stock manifolds and heads. other than the dual k an ns it was stock. muffler was a 50 series i believe. tuned port is to blame i think. my buddy had the same setup on his lg4, the q jet and he was wonderin how i got the sound, i just told him tuned port

not for nothing,,but how loud do you want it? My car is loud too, and I love the sound. But I also love the quiet my van has too. Being loud at idle means nothing,,,it is the roar when you hit the loud pedal that matters. I have nailed it down a stretch of road with concrete walls adjacent to the road. My car sounded like a winston cup car as I accelerated. That is what you want in my opinion.
