Vette exhaust so great? I don't understand it.
I keep on hearing people talk about how great the vette exhaust system is but I don't understand. I haven't done much (any) real hardcore research on exhaust flow dynamics etc. BUT I thought the more change of direction the exhaust pipe goes, the less power. The corvettes rear exhaust system has 360* on each side. That's like making a circle in your exhaust line, isn't that something you want to avoid? Does it matter any or am I just thinking like a simpleton?
Also, I was thinking about how important the length of the y-pipe should be. Isn't there some kind of specific length that would help the exhaust scavenge without "running into each other." I was just thinking about that and if we used that info to figure out which y-pipe would make the best power in theory. Sorry, one last question: What is up with the edelbrock "double D" y-pipe, is that a good or bad thing? Was it the cheapest way to fabricate in mass production or is there some kind of reason for the funky design?

I wonder the same thing. I have a last generation 1995 vette, that does not have this turn. my exhaust may be OK but is WAY too quiet.

You're right about the change in direction hurting but it wont that much as long as the diameter of the pipe is consistent and not bent too sharp- I think GM wanted the exhaust to kinda loop 180 through the mufflers to decrease noise because a single pass muffler would probably flow better - I don't know whats offered in Y pipes but reading here http://www.burnsstainless.com/Merge_...ollectors.html about merge collectors leads me to think that smooth transition makes horsepower- I'm not sure that Edelbrock is any good at making exhaust components at all
